• Since my blog was getting thousands of spam comments (caught by Akismet, fortunately), and virtually no “real” comments, I decided to turn off the comment option. I changed the setting to default to “no comments” on future posts, ran a SQL query to change all previous posts to not allow comments, and modified my blog to not include a place to post comments or view them.

Still, the spam comments continue to flow in. It’s nice that Akismet catches about 99% of them (the others go into my moderation queue), but I don’t understand HOW they are still coming in. Is there any way to block them before they even make it into the spam list?

  • Odds are your spam isn’t comments. It is trackbacks.

Consider using the Bad Behavior plugin. It’ll block a lot of ’em.

I saw another posting from about 9 months ago that said Bad Behavior wasn’t compatible with GoDaddy. Is that still the case? If so, is there another way to prevent all trackbacks (I’ve just turned off trackbacks for future posts, but haven’t done anything with older posts)

Not sure if it is still an issue with GoDaddy. A quick check at the Bad Behavior site might clear that up.

There’s a plugin or two that’ll turn off track/ping backs for all or older posts. Would be useful if I could give you a link, but this post will have to batting .000

(In the midst of reloading the machine that I’m typing on, apologies — figured it would help if you at least knew a search might find something)

According to the BB site, the issues with GoDaddy seem to have been resolved.

However, when I installed BB and activated it, I was locked out of my own site! Following the instructions on the BB site, I tried emailing info to BB for help — the email bounced.

I had to go delete the Bad Behavior folder from my site using FTP to get things going again.

I think I’m just going to live with Akismet stopping most of the trackbacks, and slow down the graying of my hair.

I really do appreciate your efforts to answer my question — I’ve just become leary of plugins (this is not the first one that hasn’t lived up to expectations for me).
