For some reason I can’t exactly identify, contact forms aren’t working on a site in development. I tried both Contact form 7 and Fast Secure Contact Form plugin, and using either, after filling out the contact form it redirects to a posts page and does not submit the information. Once I removed posts, it just goes to a 404 error page.

Based on the help files for contact form 7, I believe that there is a javascript issue, and indeed when I investigate using Firebug, I find that there are some javascript errors, but they are 304 errors, which it seems to me aren’t really standard “errors”. I can’t identify totally what the problem is, especially because I don’t know javascript very well yet.

The URL with the contact form is https://www.irgwebsites.com/macspace/contacts

    Can anyone please help me?

Your problem MIGHT NOT be with the contact form you are using, but could be either a theme or plugin conflict. Deactivate all plugins other than CF7. Try submitting a test form and see what happens. If the form submits (and is received) reactivate the plugins one-by-one and hopefully you will find the culprit. What you do from that point, is up to you.

If there is no plugin conflict, change from the theme you are presently using to one of the WP default themes. If that solves the problem, your theme is the culprit. If that is the case, contact your theme developer for their assistance.

Certainly, you do not want to have javascript errors, but the presence of a javascript does not, in and of itself, mean that is the cause of your form problem. I’ve been using CF7 on a number of my websites extensively with no problem, so from my point of view it (CF7) is rock solid.

    Good luck.

Dave – I switched themes and now it works. So how do I identify what the conflict is with my theme and resolve the problem? I went through a lot of work deciding on the theme that I chose and don’t want to switch to a different one.

    Thank you!

Glad we solved one half of your problem. Now for the biggie.

I would suggest that you contact your theme author, explain the issue to them in as much detail as you feel necessary and ask for their assistance. I have had to do the same thing with my theme author (Artisteer) and have found them very helpful, so I have a positive mindset towards theme authors, mainly because it is in their own interest to sell themes that are as conflict free as is possible.

If the theme author is unable or unwilling to help, in simple terms, you are screwed. Live with it or go with another theme (and you will never know beforhand if there will be another conflict).

^ Yes, this is one of the things that I think is a major problem with WordPress

It’s really why it is important to seek professional themes from professional theme (or plugin) vendors. The bigger framework theme places will support and make their theme work if there’s a real bug.

They won’t do customization (as that’s a paid service) but the reputable one’s will fix their bugs and provide support.

I like to think of it as a major problem with some themes. ??

Yes and no. Many themes do not have a lot of ratings. Same for plugins.

Jan hit it on the head – the so called ‘problem’ is not so much with WP as it is with the theme or plugin(s). Keep in mind the fact that the combination of themes (and the version thereof), plugins (and the versions thereof) and to a lesser degree, the versions of WordPress and you have an almost limitless combination. Then factor in the operating system you are running under and the browser (and the version thereof). To expect all of this to play well together borders on unrealistic.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not demeaning any theme or plugin, I’m simply suggesting that you CAREFULLY choose the theme and plugins you adopt and, before you make a change, make a backup and then thoroughly test what you’ve just done. You could also set up a test website away from your production environment so that you don’t accidently kill your real site with the incorporation of one not-so-good component.

    Understood.

As to my issue, a friend suggested that I uninstall and then reinstall the theme, and that seems to have worked! I do need to update my settings again, but it’s not a big deal and I’m certainly happy I don’t need to find a new theme again.

    Thank you!
