I just upgraded to v2.1. When I write a new post, there is no Default Post Category selected, even though I have one defined in Options – Writing. Changing the selected category didn’t help. This happens when viewing the site both using Firefox v2.0.0.1 and IE7. Any thoughts? Thanks.

One additional piece of information, since upgrading, the list of post categories off to the right of the writing window now includes categories from my list of links. That used to not be the case.

I upgraded from 2.0.7 and 2.0.6 on two different sites, and I am also having the problem of no default post category despite having one selected in the Options. I do not have the problem of Link categories showing up in my Post categories. I primarily use Firefox v2.0.0.1.

I don’t really see the “problem” because a more accurate description of what you see would be: the default category is not checked.
However, try to write a new post without checking any category — it will be assigned to the default category.
And if you want to put a post in a different category, you need one click less: no unclick the default and click the intended… just click where you want the post.

moshu: So this is a designed behavior? Thank you for the clarification.

I’ve since seen the same behavior on my weblog – writing a post and either publishing it or saving it does cause the default category to be checked. It still feels like a bug, however, in that the default category is not checked by default as it was before.

I am, however, marking this issue as resolved. Thanks for your help, moshu.

    From Mark Jaquith in https://trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/3685

The reasoning behind leaving the default category unchecked at first was this:

    * Default means fallback, not “something that continues to be the case when a preference has been made”
    * Many people reported being frustrated by the behavior of checking the default behavior, as many of their posts ended up being categorized in the default category

Thanks, Michael, though I’m not sure I follow the logic. I think that is saying that if you don’t check any category, the post gets written to the default category. But if you check another category, the post will get written to the checked category, but not also to the default category.

I’ve not had any issue with lost posts. Thanks again for pointing that out. I didn’t find it when I first started searching.
