    Here is the issue:

    1) Loaded the files into a subfolder: “domainname.com/blog_files/…”

    2) things worked fine… except to access the site I had to re-direct the main domain to the subfolder “…/blog_files”

    3) I’d rather not have to use a redirect script so I uninstalled the WP files and re-installed them directly to the root directory folder “domainname.com” using the FTP client

    4) the site was readable but with no formatting…

    5) so i went back to the beginning… re-installed to a sub-folder “…/blog_files”… and it worked fine again! All the formatting reappeared

    6) So i tried installing to the the main domain folder again and same issue: site is readable but with no formatting…

SO… WHY would the site have formatting when installed to a subfolder but not the root directory?

    Anyone have this issue before?

    thanks

    UPDATE:

I couldn’t leave it looking so ugly. So I deleted all the files from the root directory and re-loaded themm all back to the sub-directory.

and now it’s all fine again!

SO… WHY would the site have formatting when installed to a subfolder but not the root directory?

Because you don’t read the Codex before moving it ??
    1. Login admin > Options > General and change the two URI values (stored in the database!!!) to the root!
    2. Save.
    3. Don’t worry about the error message and don’t try to “see” your blog.
    4. Move the files to the root.
    5. Now you can admire your blog at the root…
