• NO FREE THEME HERE! LIES. They are using the www.ads-software.com theme directory to showcase their PRO THEME. Once you install the lite version there is no way to make it look anything like the screenshot!
The documentation is only direction for the pro theme. It tells you to upload the xml file which is not included in the free version. You cannot get this theme to look like the screenshot UNLESS YOU BUY THE PRO VERSION.

<strong>Files structure</strong> for the PRO THEME!

The template package you have downloaded consists of several folders. Let's see what each folder contains:

        documentation - contains documentation files.
documentation.html - the main documentation file. You are right here :)
screenshots - contains template screenshots. Not for production.
theme - contains WordPress theme files.
theme####.zip - this folder content all the necessary files for the theme.
sample_data - contains files that can make your WordPress website look like our live demo.
sample_data.xml - contains all template sample data (posts, pages, categories, etc.).
various images and other media files
manuall_install - contains files that can make your WordPress website look like our live demo.
                uploads - contains theme images.
theme#####.sql - database backup file (contains theme content).
        license.txt - contains license details.
readme.txt - contain information about theme images path and font use and usage scritps.

I posted my support question about this and got the answer:
“This is a free theme but authors can’t help it that the generic theme demo here doesn’t show off the theme’s capabilities. Most themes do not look favorable with the generic demo data.

Have you considered viewing the theme documentation?

    https://flythemesdemo.net/documentation/relief-doc/

That may help you configure your installation. Yes, that link also includes “pro” documentation but it’s their site and that’s fine. “

I installed this theme and it’s not just the demo. You cannot configure the lite theme to look like the screen shot at all!

I don’t want to buy from a theme company that wants to trick me into something right-out-of-the-box.

I have been using WP for over 7yrs. I have over 15 domains that I run, that are mine alone. I have paid for countless PRO themes, and I have coded my own.

IS THIS EVEN ETHICAL? IS IT AGAINST WORDPRESS TERMS OF USE?

To my understanding wordpress doesn’t allow for using the theme repository for this kind of selling tunnel. Are things changing?

    Hi

You are using WordPress from over 7 years and posted this feedback on our theme. We are not forcing to purchase pro version since the free theme has not many options that is the reason we have not added any documentation for it because it is very easy to use but still we will update the documentation link.

    Thank You

Correction: I have been using WordPress FOR over 7 years.

You know you are purposely being deceptive about what the free (lite) version offers.
    1. Screen shot image should show what the free theme look like.
    2. The free version is a base theme and does not have any front page customization options at all in the customizer. (User will have to code the theme to get any results similar to the screenshot).
    3. There is no documentation explaining how to use the free theme! All documentation leads the user to the pro-version documentation, the pro version documentation is not usable for the free theme since you the .xml file only exists in the paid or pro version.

    1. The screen shot image should not reflect what the pro version offers.
    2. You should clearly state that the theme will not be able to be customized without purchasing the pro version.
    3. Documentation should be for free theme as well and clearly state that the pro version has to be purchased in order to get the results of the screen shot image.

You keep using the phrase “NO FREE THEME HERE!” Open source does not mean what you think it means. You are mistaking what you do not like with something not being free or open source.

Also? Stop accusing authors of “LIES”. It’s rude and completely uncalled for. Please do not do that again. That behavior is not long tolerated here.

For any theme to be hosted on the WordPress repository it must pass a set of very rigorous requirements.

The screenshot: We went over this before.

The default demo theme data that WordPress provides is very poor and does not permit a theme to show of it’s capability. There are very few themes that will display correctly or even well using that data.

Theme authors are permitted to use screenshots that makes sense for their theme. That is allowed and appropriate.

    3. Documentation should be for free theme as well and clearly state that the pro version has to be purchased in order to get the results of the screen shot image.

Documentation is absolutely not a requirement for the WordPress repo. In your other review the section that was pro had a clear and easy to distinguish marking of what was part was for pro and not.

It’s fine to leave a review for what you like or dislike, including commenting about the documentation. That is allowed and I am leaving this review in place.

But stop with the accusations. What you dislike is not the same as not free or not allowed here.

Edit: Yes, upselling is permitted here. A plugin or theme author is allowed to have “lite” versions of their work as long as those lite versions meet the requirements. There is nothing wrong with that, it’s not unethical and doesn’t violate anything here.

    Hi @celestial-petals,
I removed your last comment because it contained personal remarks, though feel free to make another one without the bits in question.

I want to give you a tip so that you can choose whether to install a theme based on the demo data that www.ads-software.com provides. As Jan has said, this data does not reflect the best bits of a theme, but here’s a way to easily preview a theme (without installing it):

    1. Go to this URL:
    https://wp-themes.com/
    2. Append the theme slug on the end of the URL, e.g.:
    https://wp-themes.com/relief/

This website shows the theme using the www.ads-software.com demo data.

It is not clear that you are upselling to me until after you install the theme, then go look at documentation to customize it.

This update may improve your mood.

I installed this theme and attempted to configure it as the screenshot showed and was unsuccessful. I then went to the #themereview channel on Slack and expressed your concern. The theme author has been notified to correct the screenshot.

Now for the important part: Andrew and I are not on the theme review team and we have nothing to do with this theme or theme author. We’re forum moderators and we are not upselling anything.

The only thing we ask of you is to remain civil. Almost all disagreements in www.ads-software.com can be resolved in an amicable fashion without making any accusations or disparaging other people’s ethics.
