  • Are you on an Apache server?

Also, an htacess file is a *hidden file*. It has a dot in the front of the name.

I have the same problem. The .htaccess file is visible in my main public_html directory but does not show in my addon directory where I installed the WP 3.0 files.

    then create one.

    with what content?

    standalone install
    subdirectories network
    subdomains network

    with or without mod.security.c
with or without the “if mod.redirect.c”

C’mon Andrea – you know better than that, people are seeking help here.

Really? If they correctly followed the steps to enable the network, it gives them exactly what to paste in the file. It’s accessible in the backend.

You make a file on the server called .htaccess . It has a dot in front. No extension. you paste the code in it that the network options menu gives you.

A used this for a visual representation/guide before I did the setup, so I sort of knew what to expect.

step 3). “Add the following to your .htaccess file…”

@andrea – yes I know how to do it – that does not mean everyone else does.

And just to be aware – none, nay – NONE of my 2.9.2 upgrades to 3.0 (standalone or WPMU to standalone or network) across three different hosting services, upgraded the htaccess nor showed me the proposed htaccess content in admin, and NONE of them offer me the network option under tools in admin (either on home or subblogs in multi-site).

Additionally, NONE of them show me the uploads path settings boxes on the media tab – in either standalone or multisite.

There is just so much on the sites and admin sides that is not there compared to what’s shown or stated in the documentation it does lead me to wonder if there’s been a major corruption of the repository used for auto-upgrading of existing sites.

I currently have 14 sites across 3 hosts that are trashed because of this, and have halted all upgrading operations on the other sites until a resolution is found.

Manually upgrading via FTP is not a realistic option time-wise due to the sheer number of sites and the degradation of connection speed between SE Asia and the US and UK hosting services – although I’m considering upload of a “master” unzipped copy to each server then just do folder copying within the on-server file manager – would make the time required a bit more realistic.

(while I’m on a soapbox) I also noticed from the download and unzip that a LOT of WP 3.0 files still carry 2008 and 2009 timestamps – i.e. they have not been updated (or date-upped) for 3.0 – makes me utter a “hmmmm” regarding how fully the file updates were done?

@claytonjames – you just confirmed my original post to Andrea

Look again at that screenshot – CAREFULLY !!

    1. Above the code boxes it is pointing to an XAMP server on Windows – not an Apache on Linux/Unix
    2. 1st code box
    – subdomain install false,
    – $base is subdirectory under root of domain
    – domain current install = localhost (i.e. NOT a dot com)
    3. 2nd code box
    – only four salts presented, there should be 8
    4. 3rd code box (htaccess)
    – is for an install in a subdirectory of domain root ( domain.com/path/wordpress-starts-here
    – is for a sub-directories install (domain/blogname not blogname.domain)

Your source perfectly examples what I said to Andrea in my earlier post.

forgot to add – I have this in my wp-config now as a visual reminder to myself, on all sites that were upgraded from 2.9.2 to 3.0 (lines 3 & 4 are the important ones)

/** The Database Collate type. Don't change this if in doubt. */
    define('DB_COLLATE', '');
// define('MULTISITE', true ); // Using MULTISITE instead of VHOST causes database connection error on home blog but not sub-blog
define('VHOST', 'yes'); // Using VHOST instead of MULTIHOST causes no database connection error on home blog or sub-blog

Part of my unpaid job here is to educate the user so they can help themselves. some of those lines above? Were from previous upgrades.

I did look at the screenshot, thank you. Not that I’m going to trudge through every detail, and why they are relative details, and not definitive, but :

    a) I think that screen shot is intended to be used as an example of the dialog you will encounter, and what to expect when you do the setup – not a guide to every installation. It (the screenshot) just happened to be taken by someone using XAMPP

    b) ALL of my own installations are on linux boxes.

Clearly a completely different set of issues than what started this thread:

“so when i set up networks it sais to add some things to the htaccess file, but upon looking for one their is none,”

Andrea – I think everyone here (including me) fully values and appreciates the magnificent efforts you put in here, and we understand it is entirely voluntary at your own expense – If I’m coming across crabby these last few days, I apologise, frustration with non-performing upgrades and installs has me at my wits end.

Clayton – as an illustration of the page layout and what to expect to see, that graphic performs perfectly – my point is that it should NOT in any way be used as a template for what to have in the htaccess – there should be a codex page that lists the various default formats and to which install type they relate.

my point is that it should NOT in any way be used as a template for what to have in the htaccess – there should be a codex page that lists the various default formats and to which install type they relate.

And my point is, again, that the issue you introduced has nothing to do with a-kyle or syoungb’s original questions at the start of this thread. So be crabby all you want… And I nominate you to get crackin’ on that codex page. Is next Tuesday too soon? Screen-shots would be really nice too, if you don’t mind and you have the time…

    ( Just funnin’ ‘ya!)

    ??

    Thank you.

There’s a couple other mods who could use the same. ??

there should be a codex page that lists the various default formats and to which install type they relate.

they are all over the forums and codex logins are now synched with forum logins. knock yerself out. ??

I understand that moderators don’t enjoy working free of charge and answering the same questions over and over.

I would certainly be happy to pay a few bucks for help — primarily links to pages that contain ACCURATE instructions.

As someone who also upgraded from MU I’m just not able to find what I need to make things work.

I am aware of https://premium.wpmudev.org/, but $75/month is just too much, especially considering that questions not directly related to MU were referred to THIS forum.

I have a forum with a knowledgebase on a different subject and charge $45 for 6 months or $75 for a year. And that’s about what I’d be willing to pay to get some friendly answers.

As someone who also upgraded from MU I’m just not able to find what I need to make things work.

What exactly are you looking for? I’ve looked at your profile to try and help with whatever question you have, but there isn’t a specific one (other than on how to search).

I’ll give you an accurate as possible answer if you post a new thread with specific questions. ??
