I fear I should’ve never loaded the .htaccess file and that that is what caused my problem because after doing that last night, I cannot access any of my posts via the internet or the admin panel. Even “View” for existing posts from my “Manage>Posts” panel responds with “No input file specified”. Going to my blog URL now displays the directory listing (so I guess other people would just see the “No input file specified” msg since I’m logged into and of course can see my own directory). If I click on the ws-login.php file at this point, it will pull up my posts minus any WP software running (no theme anyway) but of course this ain’t good.

I just deleted the .htaccess file from my blog sub-dir and re-submitted my sitemap; will that help and is there anything else I can do besides wait for the next pass of pinging services? Or do I need to reload WP and if so, does that give people access to my past posts (I don’t think this is the solution…) TIA.

  • Forget the permalinks, first try to get back your blog.
    Permalinks can be set anytime.

Edit. See what directory? Why don’t we have a link?

that’s what I’ve been saying, forget the permalinks, how do i get the blog back?

Obviously we posted in the same time above.
So, what directory do you see? And, most importantly, where is the blog? Can we have a link to see what we are talking about?

I’ve been told to delete the .htaccess file which I suspected up front was the problem since I just uploaded it last night

then I was told to clear out the permalink structure which is displayed right on the admin panel but then told that having index.php in front is okay which is what I’ve got anyway

so I still don’t know what I need to do to get the blog back, except for maybe reloading WP but not re-installing it becaue it would clear the history so then I asked if I could upload my local copy which would keep my theme settings but I haven’t heard about that yet, miss anything?
not knowing,I’ll wait some more thx

You are missing the index file of the WP root directory. Maybe you deleted it together with the .htaccess file.
Put it back – the “short and sweet” one that has only 4-5 lines.
    (and welcome back, LOL)

    Confidence is lovely!

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

    I thank you very much!

Should I even be using the .htaccess file listed above, or an edited version of it then? Again, thanks so much for the help Moshu.

Lesson #1: if you see a directory listing – always check first whether it has an index file or not… before panicking!

    true,

I think we bumped again, Should I even be using the .htaccess file listed above, or an edited version of it then?

    yes I know now lol

I am “illiterate” when it comes reading a .htaccess file. I know my host has the mod_rewrite module, so when I want to use “nice permalinks” I just let WP to write the rules. I don’t even look at that file since I don’t understand it anyway ??
I’d recommend to find out first whether your host has enabled the rewrite module or not. If not, stick with what you have. If yes – trial and error ??

gotcha, I tried that already but crappy DreamHost won’t answer, so if anyone knows…

trial & error, no thanks, don’t wonna bother you guys again lol

THANKS SO MUCH, HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

check out my brand new post just done lol
