I have Email Users plugin installed on one of my sites and have been using it successfully for a while but now it is removing all the line breaks.

I don’t know if the latest update has something to do with it or not but the only thing I have done since the last time I used it (a month ago) is update a few plugins, Email Users being one of them.

Any thoughts on how to fix the problem?

There is zero difference in email content regardless of how many recipients are selected (1, 10, 100, etc.). None. Now absolutely there can be a difference between sending an “Post Notifcation” to one or more users versus a “Send to Users(s)” or “Send to Group(s)” operation because WordPress, the theme, and plugins will all process the Post/Page content as part of creating the email content.

No matter what operation you perform, removal of line breaks, is not related t the number of recipients. I don’t see how it could be.

Some additional questions for those of you experiencing the line break problem.

    1. Does the post look correct in the preview before hitting the send button? As an example, take a look at this screen shot from my Swim Team Demo site. The tables are formatted correctly, the spacing is correct, etc.
    2. What email client are you seeing the removal of line breaks in? I receive a number of Email newsletters where Outlook reports that “line breaks have been removed, click here to restore them” or something to that effect. When that happens, line breaks are being removed at the client and not via WordPress.
    3. Do you have multiple email “test accounts” that you can use for testing? I have a couple Gmail addresses and an Outlook.com address plus my work email and personal email which I can send to in order to see if the mail looks the same.

    Mike,

1- Yes it does look correct in the preview.
2- Gmail, Macos Mail, Windows Thunderbird
3- Yes I have multiple email accounts for testing. All looks same, no line break.

Can you forward one of the emails to me to look at? You can send it to mpwalsh8 at gmail dot com.

    I sent email.

I cannot find the email you sent me. I’ve gone through my spam as well. What is the subject or what email address was it from?

Subject: [IATI CRO BLOG] “Mobil Uygulama – Sat?? temsilcilerini tan?mlama”

    I sent again.

Exactly the same problem! Fine in preview, no line breaks in any mail client.

    No reported conflicts with filters.

Is there a fix for this please?

No there has not been a fix because I cannot replicate this problem on any of my own sites nor in my developmt area. I need access to a system where I can run some tests and figure out what the problem is.

    HI Mike
Thanks for the super fast response!

H1 – h6 work fine with line breaks. Anything typed directly into your Default Notification Body works fine with line breaks.

It seems only the unmarked p paragraphs from the body of a post concatenate into one long stream of text.

I “fixed” the problem by setting the format for the actual variables “%excerpt%” or “%content%” as pre formatted.

    Everything worked fine after that.
    Hope this helps others.

    Hi toddleweb and/or Mike

How do you set the format for the actual variables “%excerpt%” or “%content%” as pre formatted.

    Hi

In the Default Notification Body where you set up the wording for the email, you typically use the %EXCERPT% or %CONTENT% variables.

Just highlight the variable name from the % to the closing % sign and use the Format (paragraph) dropdown in the visual editor to select “pre”.

Seems to make the content of the post behave properly – dont ask why!

    Good luck

Selecting “pre” for the paragraph format means the content you have selected to be wrapped in

     and

elements. The HTML PRE element treats the text as preformatted. However your text is formatted, it will stay that way. This may or may not be what you want.

I am still suspicious that there is a filter which is manipulating your post content. By default, the WYSIWYG editor (TinyMCE) intelligently adds P paragraph tags to your post content. There are ways to turn it off which if it happens, the text will all be run together.

    Hi Mike
WP 4.1 doesn’t show any p tags in a post anymore – view in text editor mode – there is nothing – and it also strips out p tags if u put them in.

… when u are desperate u will try anything, LOL.

Will see if I can find time to pinpoint what is causing it.
