No longer able to create columns on pages

Hello,

With the latest WordPress upgrade I am no longer able to create columns on pages using the Classic Editor.

I have tried plugins that formerly did the job using shortcodes and they no longer work. I have also tried using HTML <div></div> tags and they no longer work.

The developers of my theme tell me that since implementation of the Gutenberg editor this is the new normal.

I want to continue using the Classic Editor. Is there a workaround for this kind of problem? If not, is it something you can possibly deal with in a new release?
