• Hello, I have a free Mailchimp account and I have installed MailChimp List Subscribe Form plugin and I want to connect to Mailchimp. I have this message: “Uh-oh, you don’t have any lists defined! Please visit MailChimp, login, and setup a list before using this tool!”.
But I created a list in my Mailchimp Account. What’s wrong? What do I have to do? Thank you very much.

  • Hey Frances,

Thanks for getting in touch. To help us troubleshoot the issue you’re seeing, can you try a few things for us? First, can you try disconnecting the plugin from your MailChimp account, then reconnecting it?

If the issue persists, I suggest checking on some details with your host which could be disrupting normal operation of the plugin.

First, try to make certain outgoing connections are being allowed. If outgoing connections are blocked from the WordPress installation, the plugin would be unable to retrieve the lists from the account.

Next, see if you can double check your host has enabled the “fsockopen” php function. This can sometimes be disabled, and is the function used by the plugin to connect to MailChimp.

If you can double check these things for us and changing those settings doesn’t help (or they don’t apply), if you can get back to us with details of your installation that’d be great. Details like WP version, MailChimp plugin version number, and potentially the name of your hosting provider as well. If you’d like to send more details as well which you wouldn’t want to publish publicly here on the forum, you can send an email with your details to wordpress [at] mailchimp [dot] com. In that case, though, we’d still appreciate if you could reply here notifying us you’ve done so.

    Thanks,
    Gabe

I have tried to disconnect the plugin from my Mailchimp account and then to reconnect it, but I haven’t solved the problem.
I don’t know how to check if outgoing connections are being allowed or if my host has enabled the “fsockopen” php function.
However, I give you the details requested:
    Wordpress version: 3.8
    Plugin version: 1.4.1
    Hosting provider: Altervista

    Thank you!

    Thanks for those details!

With Altervista, you should be able to go into your Control Panel, then go to PHP Settings, and find options for Server to Server communication. If you can get that working, that should help!

I have an Alterblog account, so I haven’t this kind of settings. I don’t know what to do…

I definitely understand the concern. After exploring the options on AlterVista, it appears that by default AlterVista only allows server-to-server connections to some very specific servers and the option I mentioned for opening up other connections can only be done if you convert from AlterBlog to AlterSite.

If you decide to go that route, the necessary option in the left side of your AlterBlog WordPress panel is in Settings > Show Advanced > Convert to AlterSite. There could possibly be some data loss during this process, however, so I would be very careful of this and make certain it’s the route you’d like to take.

If it is, then once you’re on an AlterSite you can then go to Resources > PHP, then scroll down to find the server settings to activate, which will require sending an SMS message. That would do the trick.
