No on screen confirmation of payment or registration

If I understand correctly from the settings in Event Manager, there is a message that should appear after successfully making a payment. But when the screen returns from PayPal, I am just back at the event page, with no indication that any payment has been made or that the registration for the event succeeded. Otherwise, the customer does get confirmation email and the number of registrants is indeed incremented.
I realize that I could redirect to a custom-designed page, but have not done so.
I see no error messages when debugging in enabled. I am at a loss to understand what should be happening after payment.
