Hey, everyone.

I’ve been considering using wordpress for a site that I’m in the middle of designing, so I thought I’d install it and do some playing around, but I seem to have some problems getting the install happening.

I’m using byethost’s free hosting package. I’ve checked and it does indeed meet WordPress minimum requirements (php version 5.2.6 and mySQL version 5.0.51).

As per the detailed instructions, I created a database by the name of “wordpress” (though my server promptly attached myusername_ to it as a suffix) using the CPanel method, which was no problem in and of itself, but it doesn’t give me an option to add usernames or passwords anywhere.

I also tried the phpMyAdmin method and got a different version of the same thing – I could connect to the database I’d already created or create a new one, but not add usernames or anything of the sort.

The upshot of this is that when I try to run the wp-admin/install.php file, I get the “Error establishing a database connection” message. (Yes, I checked two or three times to make sure I was typing the address correctly.) So, my questions: (finally!)

Since I couldn’t create my own username and password for this database, I’ve filled out the wp-config with the username and password assigned to my by byethost. Is this the correct approach? (And yes, I left the localhost value alone.) I’ve also used “myusername_wordpress” for the database name value. Should I be using just “wordpress”, which is what I named the database, even though the db now appears in my account as “myusername_byethost”?

One last thought – and this is probably a dumb question but I might as well get all my stupid out now – I notice it’s possible to install wordpress locally. If I were to install and design my wordpress locally, would I still need to install wordpress on the server, or could I just upload the files needed folr the website?

Well, if my long-winded post hasn’t scared the lot of you off, then thanks for making it this far. XP and thanks for any input, it’s appreciated!

  • Many free hosts assign one database user and you are stuck with that ONE user.

afaik, byethost doesn’t use localhost. they use something like sqlxxx_byethostx.com . you can find details about this information from e-mail they’ve sent to you.

just upload the files needed for the website.

Wow – thanks for the prompt responses, guys! I’ll check for alternate localhost values, curiosity killed the cat, but I’ll probably just install locally and see what happens (makes the inner bandwith nazi happy).

    Thanks again!
