• I changed a payment link from Stripe to Woo. When an order was placed on Stripe, I received an email about it. However, when an order was placed via Woo on Feb 18th, I received the payment but no notification email about the order.

Fast forward two weeks—tonight, March 3rd, the customer reached out, wondering where their product was. I went to WooCommerce Support and explained the issue to their AI chatbot. The response I received was:

“I understand you’re not receiving email notifications for orders on your WooCommerce store. Let me help you troubleshoot this issue.
Here are the main steps to check:
    Verify Email Settings:

    • Go to WooCommerce > Settings > Emails
    • Select the relevant email template
    • Ensure “Enable this email notification” is checked
…Would you like me to explain any of these steps in more detail?”

My email was set, and “Enable this email notification” is checked.

I’ve since installed the WP Mail Logging plugin as suggested and am testing it out. I’m frustrated that I had to take these extra steps. This situation has made me look unprofessional and unintentionally left the customer in the dark. I imagine many others are encountering the same issue.

If the issue isn’t WooCommerce’s fault and lies with WordPress, why not add a warning and suggested steps to prevent others from experiencing the same frustration? If this is a known issue, why not address it and help us avoid these challenges by setting us up for success?

    Hi @pranaman ,

I’m really sorry to hear about the trouble you’re having with WooCommerce not sending order notification emails. I can totally understand how frustrating that can be, especially when it affects your customer experience.

Just to clarify, by default, WooCommerce uses the wp_mail() function, which is a core WordPress function to send emails. So, if the email isn’t being sent, the issue is likely not with WooCommerce itself, but rather with the core email function on your web host or somewhere else in the email process.

To help troubleshoot, could you let me know the status of the customer’s order in question? Is this happening for all orders, or just specific ones? Also, if you could try placing a test order and check the WP Mail Logging plugin for any logged entries, that would be really helpful!

To improve email delivery, we often recommend setting up SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol). This can help ensure better email delivery and reduce the chances of emails being marked as spam or not delivered at all.

You might want to give the WP Mail SMTP plugin a try. It allows you to send emails through a third-party SMTP server, which should improve deliverability.

For more details on how to troubleshoot email issues, you can check out this guide: WooCommerce Email FAQ.

Please check this out and let me know what you find!

It says Processing. It was my first order with woocommerce.

I tried the WP Mail SMTP plugin, created a test order, and I did get an email notification right away.

As I mentioned, if the issue isn’t WooCommerce’s fault and lies with WordPress, and several other people have reported that they have experienced this too, why not add a warning and suggested steps to prevent others from experiencing the same frustration, or even better, work with wordpress, since woo is a fairly well-known plugin, so this doesn’t happen for anyone?

    Hi @pranaman,

I completely get how frustrating it is when order emails don’t arrive as expected—especially when it’s your first sale! That’s a huge milestone for your WooCommerce store, and I’m really glad to hear that setting up the WP Mail SMTP plugin helped get those notifications flowing smoothly.

You’re absolutely right to call this out. Relying on WordPress’s built-in email function wp_mail() can sometimes feel unpredictable, and when emails don’t send, it directly affects both your business and your customers’ experience.

However, the issue isn’t always just about WordPress core email function—it can also be influenced by hosting configurations, server settings, and how different email providers handle deliverability.

I really appreciate your suggestion to add a warning about potential email issues. Communication and proactive guidance are key, and feedback like yours helps us improve the experience for everyone. While WooCommerce does rely on WordPress’s email function, we’re always looking at ways to make notifications more reliable.

In the meantime, setting up an SMTP plugin (like WP Mail SMTP) is definitely the best way to ensure emails land where they should—without getting lost in spam filters or blocked by email providers.

Thanks again for sharing your experience and for your thoughtful feedback. We really appreciate it!

Thank you for your understanding. I installed WP Mail SMTP, created a test run, and got an email just fine. In over 10 years of working with WP, I have never seen an email not get sent, wp_mail() or not (whatever that is).

I think by now handling email should be a route and basic thing, and not cause issues nor hangups. I look forward to hearing that the issue gets fixed going forward.

    Thank you
