I just switched my over to using the Gutenberg editor and discovered that the text field for adding a subtitle to a post is no longer visible. Any chance you’ll be updating the plugin to work with Gutenberg or does anyone have any recommendations for how to make it work?

  • Gutnberg has own subheading block for that.

Add css class and style it as you want.

I could update the plugin so that if a subheading block is added via Gutenberg, the plugin will use the subheading block if trying to display a subtitle on archives etc.

    Would that make sense?

That’s fine, but why you don’t create custom subtitle gutenberg block?

You’re right, it would possibly be better to have a custom block.

I have already made some steps towards the development of this but am hesitant to release anything so far without working out a proper roadmap for Gutenberg support and backwards compatibility until Gutenberg is closer to being merged.

For example, for legacy data I don’t believe I can easily force any existing posts to show subtitle blocks if the subtitle is already set etc.

The next release of the plugin will at least allow the subtitle to be editing in Gutenberg via a metabox before deciding the best implementation as a Gutenberg blog.

Also note that the Gutenberg Subheading block is now removed/deprecated:

Version 3.1 now shows the subtitle field in the Gutenberg sidebar (like excerpt for posts).

As many people display the subtitle on archive pages, separately to the content, I will likely hold off on creating a subtitle block for now. For the moment I will try to follow how the excerpt is handled in Gutenberg and will likely review this as Gutenberg progresses in terms of templates and handling of the main page title.

Thank you very much for the update!

    Any updates on this?

    Thanks

it seems 5.0 has broken the metabox you implemented with version 3.1. Any ideas on a fix? I have right now just used ACF to add a metabox that adds the data into the wp_subtitles field, but this is an awkward fix to say the least
