No ‘rel canonical’ in the image header

    Regarding SEO performance of my website, I’ve noticed that Optimole is not using rel=canonical for final images, just for the placeholder images used during lazy-load. Is that correct? Shouldn’t this tag be used on final images as well?
    What I understand is that even though Google is directed correctly from the placeholder image to the original one, it then moves to Optimole CDN server, not knowing the original URL…?
    In other words my original images are not associated correctly with my website address, right?

    I fully agree that this might affect SEO.

    However, do you think this can be mitigated with image meta tags per image?

    Hi, am not an expert whatsoever, I’ve just learned that it’s a good practice to include rel=canonical with all the CDN links but Optimole, sadly, is not doing it. I am thinking of moving away from Optimole, it’s just it’s working well with Elementor (lazy load – even for background images) and for now I can’t see any other alternative…

    Thanks Vytis, I’ve seen this, but according to this article (and some others as well) having rel=canonical is crucial for SEO:

    “An extra HTTP header added to your Zone lets the crawler know, that the content from the CDN is only a copy. Once we add rel=”canonical” to the HTTP header, we’re on the safe side. Crawlers are aware that this is only a copy.”

    And currently Optimole is not doing it (except for placeholders) which is a big shame.

    The rel=canonical is set on placeholder images since they are crawled by the crawlers. It should not be required to have rel=canonical on the final images as those are only used by the users.

    However I will open a ticket with regards to this so we can investigate and maybe change this in a future update as I don’t see any downside to also serving this on the regular images.
