We have posted this issue her AND on their web site 4 times.

There is a BUG in W3. We installed it. It seemed to run fine. Ran some speed tests. note it was working. We were/are using memcached.

Then, we deactivated it temporarily JUST to run same speed tests. We made NO OTHER CHANGES, UPDATES, etc. to ANYTHING.
W3 was only de-activated for 7 hours. But when we re-activated it, we got a fatal error:

Fatal error: Class ‘Memcache’ not found in /var/www/vhosts/AppBuzzinga.com/httpdocs/wp-content/plugins/w3-total-cache/lib/W3/Cache/Memcached.php on line 38

The only response we have gotten was ,
” memcached must not be present”

Forgetting for a moment that 7 hours before it was running fine, the error was RUUNING memcached.php when the error occured.

There are some issues that should be addressed whether you are “paying” for support ot not.

Try deleting the following files through your FTP or File Manager:

    1. /wp-content/w3tc-config/master.php
    2. /wp-content/cache/config/master.php

Total Cache IS not supporting memcached, it is using “memcache” without D. You cant use memcached with it.

Seriously? Your contribution is to point out a spelling error?

Strange problem indeed. I assume under “Performance > General Settings > Object Cache” you have it disabled (unchecked) — assuming you are not using object caching?

If you are making use of object caching what is your “Object Cache method”?

And lastly, under “Performance > Dashboard > Compatibility Check > Memcache extension:” what does it say?

    Thanks
    Kimberly

    PS –
And as a heads up, to make use of the “memcache” php extension you need to ensure it is installed on your system. If you have cPanel installed you could check to see if it is already installed and if not checkmark it on to install it (via “Select PHP Version > memcache”)

As we said, memcache was working with W3 – so YES, it was and is installed and running just fine.

We were NOT using object caching. But since W3 gives a FATAL error and does not restart, you can not check settings.

To repeat: W3 was installed AND WORKING WITH Memcache. We JUST turned it off momentarily to run speed tests, and got the fatal error when we re-activated.

We made NO changes, NO installs, NO adjustments. Just ran some speed tests on pages using test sites such as pingdom

    Hey there,

I just saw this while looking for something else. If I were you, I would follow this uninstall procedure exactly. Then, reinstall.

    https://www.shoutmeloud.com/how-to-delete-uninstall-w3-total-cache-wordpress-plugin.html

***Sometimes, I find things may work (with any plugin) for a while and then cause some crash for x,y,z reason. So, consider reinstalling with Memcache for a while. If you get a similar error in whatever you do then just uninstall again with the above link procedure and reinstall without Memcache if needed.

    Hope it helps some . . .

***Like I mentioned (just passing through and thought I would chime it on what I might do if I were in your shoes) . . .

Normally, we would just uninstall and re-install.

But we spent days configuring w3 to get the max speed. Stupidly, we did not save the settings before we turned it off to test same pages with no cache on – we had NO idea the damn thing would just crash with a fatal error so you can NOT re-activate it.

Have you checked with your host to see if they actually have a snapshot from a previous time that may help?

Yea, I hear ya…it can take some time to configure…

    Thread Starter deadparrotsoftware

    (@deadparrotsoftware)

As I stated in previous replies, WE are the hoster (dedicated server), and no, there was not a previous snapshot, as we had NO inkling that merely turning the plugin off and back on would cause a catastrophic failure! (It ran for a month with NO issues after we configured it)

memcache and memcached are different things, that’s probably what deex was referring to, not a simple spelling error.

At any rate, this plugin is largely abandoned, no meaningful updates since August 2014. Time to find a new solution.

    Thread Starter deadparrotsoftware

    (@deadparrotsoftware)

It was updated a week ago.

Not sure what “meaningful” means, but obviously the creators are still out there doing something . . . except addressing this problem that is. ??

    Sid

Meaningful means more than just updating one line in the readme file. You can see so in the dev logs:

    https://plugins.trac.www.ads-software.com/log/w3-total-cache?limit=100&mode=stop_on_copy&format=rss

In other words, just because it’s been updated doesn’t mean anything has changed other than the supported version number. In this case we have multiple bug reports pending yet the supported version is 4.5 which hasn’t been released yet.
