I just started my first blog post since installing 4.3.1. I’m appalled to see there’s no way to save a draft of a post – there used to be a “save draft” button on the “Publish” box, now there’s ONLY a “Publish” button. I had to publish an unfinished post and make it private. This is extremely inconvenient, why did you take that away?? And how do I save partial work? I write travel blogs and it often takes me several days to complete them, I MUST be able to save drafts without publishing.

there is a save draft button, if you can’t see it then there’s likely something wrong with your installation.

try deactivating all of your plugins and reverting back to the default theme to see if the button comes back. if it does, reactivate your plugins one by one until it goes away and then you know what’s causing the issue.

as an aside, i would recommend creating your content for your posts in an offline app like notepad or textedit and then when you’ve completed it copy and paste it into wordpress for styling that way you don’t have to be online to do your writing…

I beg to differ with you.

I have exactly 7 plugins installed and active normally: Akismet, HTML Import 2 (no longer needed), NextGEN Gallery by Photocrati, TinyMCE Advanced, TwentyTen: No Max Editor Width (probably not needed if I can stay with the Photocrati theme I was using), WP Social Bookmarking Light, and WPtouch Mobile Plugin. I deactivated one at a time with the Photocrati theme I was using in place, to no effect. I then changed my theme to TwentyFifteen and deactivated ALL the plugins at once. I still have only 2 buttons in my post edit session: Update (which was Publish before I accidentally hit it) and Preview. I still can’t save a draft.

You may prefer building posts in Notepad, but I don’t. I’ve been blogging directly in WordPress since 2006 and never had this trouble with the editor. I call it a bug.

No, it is not a bug or 44 million other users would be screaming. Normally when something is wrong with the back end it is a javascript problem which is why you were asked to deactivate your plugins.

Try a different browser. Problem goes away? If not, delete the wp-admin and wp-includes folders. Do NOT touch the wp-content folder. Upload and unzip a new copy of WP. Replace the deleted folders with the new ones.

Even though you tried a default theme, you might also want to check with your theme’s support at https://members.photocrati.com/

You’re quite right, it isn’t a bug – as so often, it’s user error. I simply didn’t realize that, once I’d actually published a post (even if I didn’t mean to), the “Save Draft” would go away… I don’t suppose there’s any way to “unpublish” something? Although so far I can work on it in “private” mode, so no one can see it till I’m done. If I had a brain, I’d be dangerous.

In the post’s Publish meta-box, Status has an ‘edit’ link revealing a dropdown where you can select ‘draft’.

In my accidentally published post, which I set to Private so no one would see it till I was done, the Status line in the Meta box is not editable. It says “Privately published” with no dropdown. I then changed status to “public” – which made the Status line editable. I’m now back in Draft mode and the “Save Draft” button is there. Knocking head against wall. Thank you.

    Thank you very much, hedera!
I have the exactly same problem: All my draft posts seems to be set to “private” automatically and this is not what I want.
There is no direct way to set a post from “private” back to “draft” only the roundabout route with “public”, OK and then you get the possibility to set it back to “draft”.
    Not that obvious…

I haven’t posted anything on my blog for a few months–apparently, not since some significant updates were made. when I tried last night, I found that:

–I have no Save Draft button in the Publish box, even for a post in Draft status with Public visibility. I noticed people saying that a fix for this problem might be deactivating plug-ins; how do I do that? (When I click Plug-Ins from my dashboard, all I get is a screen asking if I want to upgrade so I can use three commerce-related [I think]updates.)

–When I made some corrections to an old post and clicked update, it republished the post! How do I prevent that?

–I can’t easily switch to the classic editing mode. Had that been disallowed?

    Thanks.

Please start your own thread. Posting in an old, resolved thread will limit your chances for support.
