No sidebar

In your theme options > home layout. Have you selected to show a sidebar?

And I have replaced the front page, with a page that I know displays the sidebar, but when I select it as the front page, the sidebar just isn’t there

ok but the font page is controlled by the theme options. So in the theme options > home layout have you enabled a sidebar? It doesn’t matter what page template your using. As soon as it’s set as the front page it controlled through the theme options.
