“No such customer” error in live mode

    Hi,
    Our site is using Stripe extension since 4 months, without any problem, … until yesterday.

    When I try to buy a product and pay with a bank card, this error occurs :
    “No such customer: cus_FKJbVq5r5YT0qf; a similar object exists in test mode, but a live mode key was used to make this request.”

    Some precisions :

    – I am the site admin.
    – Woo commerce is v. 3.9.2
    – Stripe extension is v. 4.3.2
    – I used the test mode before opening the site, and I had a client account in test mode. I suppressed every client in test mode in Stripe dashboard, and the issue is still here.
    – I have NO client account in live mode. When I search for my name, the only things I find are several “Card” entries, one for each of my attempts to buy the product!

    This error is happening because the customer id is present on WooCommerce end but not on stripe. Stripe customer ID is saved as metadata in the database (wp_usermeta database table). It can be accessed using a plugin like phpMyAdmin:

    Editing database tables directly is usually not recommended since it is easy to break the whole site. If you decide to do that – I’d suggest double-checking your site backup system works and you have a backup of the database table you’re editing.

    If the Stripe customer ID is present in the database on WooCommerce side, but it is not present on Stripe side – this error will be thrown.

    This can happen for existing users if the site is switched from test to live mode, for example, or if the site is switched to a new Stripe account.

    In that case, the Stripe customer ID is present in your database but it is not present on Stripe side.

    Stripe customer ID is removed from the database if the user is completely deleted from wp-admin >> Users.

    In this case, you have three options:

    1. Delete the user on WooCommerce side and then re-create that user.
    Reach out to Stripe support team and ask them to copy users from one account to the other one.
    2. Remove the whole row with Stripe customer ID associated with this particular user from wp_usermeta database table.
    3. Copy the Stripe customer ID from your database, create a user in Stripe and add the Stripe customer ID.

    This isn’t my topic, but today I ran into the same problem when switching between Stripe accounts. I just want to say thanks Praveen for a details explanation and description of possible solutions. In my case I was happy to delete the _stripe_customer_id rows from WP’s wp_usermeta table.

    I wonder though, if it might be possible for the plugin to fallback gracefully if a matching customer is not found in Stripe? Perhaps resubmit the order to Stripe without a customer ID, so that it is not rejected? It seems heavy handed for the order to fail.

    Also I notice that my stores old users/customers do not have a _stripe_customer_id field, and customers were not created for them in Stripe. I assume that creating Stripe customers for Woo orders is a new feature/requirement?

    Regarding the “more graceful” handling of this situation/error, there is an open report in the plugin repository here:

    Hopefully that will be added in a (near) future version of the plugin! : )

    As for your old customers who do not have a Stripe customer ID, it’s possible this was changed in a previous version of the plugin. I see the following mentioned in the changelog:

* Save card/customer id for regular orders.

    It’s possible prior to that it only saved a customer ID for customers with subscriptions (and not regular orders). You can check other changes in the changelog here:
