No thumbnails using WordPress.com interface

Plugin works fine using regular wp page authoring interface. but with wp. com interface, no thumbnails, no columns, etc. just the links.

to clarify: creating galleries with this interface, add content>>select documents tab>>insert. this is different for adding a gallery of images, where the next step after add content is continue, allowing you to choose how to display the thumbnails.
