No WXR Files — am I screwed?

Two things I can think of:

1) Do you still have access to your account on the old server? If so, you should log in there and immediately do a database export in the WP admin area, and/or go into phpMyAdmin and do an SQL export. Also download the contents of your uploads folder so you have all your images and other files you uploaded. If not, contact your host and ask them if there’s any way they can get you an SQL export of your blog database – perhaps they still have a backup.

2) Was your old blog spidered by Google? If so, you could go to the cached version of your old blog posts in Google and do some copy/pasting and image copying.

Option (1) is obviously vastly preferable to option (2).

Yes, blog is still up on the older server and I can access it via the IP address. However (and trying not to get too technical here) due to the initial WP activation of my original blog, I think it defined my site URL in the PHP code so even when I try to log in using the ip address (e.g. xx.xxx.xx.xxx/blog/wp-admin.php) it redirects it to my domain name (which of course, is the new empty blog!)

In short, I can’t access my old Dashboard without some tweaking of PHP…

Since you can’t access the WordPress admin area, try the other suggestion zoonini offered:

and/or go into phpMyAdmin and do an SQL export…
If not, contact your host and ask them if there’s any way they can get you an SQL export of your blog database – perhaps they still have a backup.

Where exactly do I find phpMyAdmin? Is this a WordPress thing or something I have to look for within my (previous but still active) server?

Couple more thoughts:

Do you have access to phpMyAdmin through the IP as well? You could at least do a download of your database that way. There is also a way to change the base domain in the database tables themselves, so you might be able to switch it to the IP to be able to regain access to the admin area.

Another thought is to change your DNS back to point to the old server temporarily, do your database export, then switch it back to the new one.

In either case, if you still have FTP access to the old server via the IP, be sure to connect and download all your uploads.

phpMyAdmin is a GUI that lets you manage MySQL databases. It’s often provided by hosts via your control panel. If you can still log into your hosting control panel, you may find it there. If you can’t find it, contact your host and ask them whether it’s available.

Ok, I can see phpMyAdmin in my server’s managing dashboard and see what I do from that. Re-directing the DNS back to the old sever sounds the most logical way so far. Will check w/ my current server to see if it’s ok. Thanks for the input. Will keep you all posted!!!
