Not sure if this is something that’s been observed by any other users but currently in this category XML and I’m seeing a phantom item that shouldn’t exist. I’m not sure how it got there and wondering if there’s anything that can be done to fix this.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

@goingawesomeplaces We checked on your sitemap and do see an item without the domain listed as ‘https://deals_tips_tricks

We would first recommend checking whether this exists as a category in WordPress? If it does exist, and you want to remove it from the sitemap, you ca do so by going to the edit screen for the category, clicking on the ‘Advanced‘ area of the Yoast SEO metabox, and setting the value for ‘Allow search engines to show this Category in search results?’ to ‘No‘.

If the item is still appearing in your category sitemap, you can also force a sitemap cache reset by temporarily disabling the sitemap feature, and then re-enabling. To do so please perform the following steps:

    ?In WordPress go to SEO>General>Features
?For ‘XML Sitemaps‘ Toggle the switch to ‘Disabled.’
    ??Click ‘Save Changes.’
?Toggle the switch back to ‘Enabled.’
    ?Click ‘Save Changes.’

?We also have a guide on how to enable/disable XML Sitemaps here: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/enable-xml-sitemaps-in-the-wordpress-seo-plugin/

Thanks for your quick response. The name sounds familiar but is not a category that I currently have.

I went ahead and disabled and renabled XML sitemaps. I still see it there but does it take some time for it to do the sitemap cache reset?

@goingawesomeplaces We checked on the sitemap and it does look like may be being cached:

    cbailey$ curl -I https://goingawesomeplaces.com/category-sitemap.xml

    HTTP/1.1 200 OK
    Date: Sun, 12 Jul 2020 05:54:21 GMT
    Content-Type: text/xml; charset=UTF-8
    Connection: keep-alive
    Set-Cookie: __cfduid=dd4004a2a966c3d6467ef94a7d19519c71594533261; expires=Tue, 11-Aug-20 05:54:21 GMT; path=/; domain=.goingawesomeplaces.com; HttpOnly; SameSite=Lax
    Vary: Accept-Encoding
    X-Robots-Tag: noindex, follow
    X-Powered-By: centminmod
    X-Rocket-Nginx-Serving-Static: No
    CF-Cache-Status: DYNAMIC

    Server: cloudflare
    CF-RAY: 5b188254583d855e-ORD

We would next recommend to try clearing the cache at Cloudflare.

Also, we recommend to exclude sitemaps from caching and have a guide on this here: https://yoast.com/help/exclude-sitemaps-from-cache/

Also, you can find more information on how to exclude a URL from Cloudlfare caching here: https://support.cloudflare.com/hc/en-us/articles/200172316-How-do-I-include-or-exclude-a-specific-URL-from-Cloudflare-s-page-rules-

    (@goingawesomeplaces)

Thanks for that. I just excluded the sitemap as recommended from WP Rocket and I cleared the cache on Cloudflare and WP Rocket.

Do you see anything different on your end?

I hesitated excluding the URL as I wasn’t sure if I needed to exclude the parent level https://goingawesomeplaces.com/sitemap_index.xml or the individual sitemaps.

We are still seeing it listed https://goingawesomeplaces.com/category-sitemap.xml.

You can exclude the category-sitemap from caching and then try clearing all the caching one last time.

If you do that, does the issue resolve?

    (@goingawesomeplaces)

I just went into Cloudflare and set the URL https://goingawesomeplaces.com/category-sitemap.xml to “Cache Level: Bypass” and followed this with a full purge.

I checked in incognito and still see it there.

One thought I had was whether this is something I need to go into the tables themselves to try to figure out why that phantom category is showing up?

We are not sure. At this point we recommend the following:

    1. You could go into the tables and take a look. If it shows up you can delete it.

    2. Give it 24 hours. Sometimes caching needs time to clear out. Try also to disable the sitemaps and re-enable them again.

    3. Please Check for conflicts. You can install the healthcheck plugin and deactivate all your non-Yoast plugins and switch to standard theme and then check the category-sitemap to see if that URL is removed. Doing so will not affect how your visitors see the site.

I’ve waited 2 days now and I don’t think it cleared out but if you could check for me that would be great.

Lastly, if I have to go the tables route, do you know which one I need to be looking for?

@goingawesomeplaces We rechecked the https://goingawesomeplaces.com/category-sitemap.xml page and unfortunately the ‘https://deals_tips_tricks’ URL is still present in the sitemap.

As for which table categories are within, that is the wp_terms table. You can find more information on this here: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Database_Description#Table:_wp_terms
