I tried Directorist a few years ago but it wasn’t quite doing the trick and many things were on the to do list. I am going to download and try it out again but I have a few questions before I go to all that effort to find out the hard way it doesn’t do the trick even after all this time. I have questions.

I see it finally offers multiple directory types in the same directory install. Is that a correct understanding? So one Directorist install would, in theory, allow me to set up a business directory, hotels directory, classifieds with say real estate and cars and general merch, etc.?

If that is the case, what kind of category conflict or restrictions are available? For example, In a classifieds location of Texas, somebody is interested in a blue car. If somebody clicks on Texas in the restaurant directory are they going to get all the stuff in all directories listed in Texas or is it specific to its directory? One directory with Texas location shows only classified stuff, another only restaurants in Texas, another only accommodations in Texas, etc.

When I first looked at this it was one directory for one purpose so I’m wanting to correctly understand it as it is now and what you actually mean by multiple directories.

Is there an option for non registered users to use the directory? I use Ultimate Member to handle registrations. I don’t need Directorist to register people unless it offers fully customizable registration forms and not the bare bones username, email and password. I have a referral system I use with the registration page and UM allows me multiple role registration pages which I’m sure Directorist does not.

Once they’re registered, I can lock down the listing submission pages to the allotted roles but that will really only work if Directorist offers a no registration required front end listing option for non members. Post it and go.

Is there a blog option included in this directory? If so, would it also have a similar category and location ability like the directories? If not, would it be doable to make another directory but as a blog with blog type categories?

And finally, how frequently do you do updates? I do recall when I first tried it, the devs were constantly messing with it. Every 2 days another update that would wreck all my customizations. It got annoying to the point I had to stop using it, on top of the lack of features.

    Thanks for the info!

I installed it without the demo content or the theme to see how it works on what I already have.

Is there a way to add additional categories and is there a way to add them in bulk so I don’t have to add them one item at a time? I do not have the time for all that. I use PODS and Bulk Express so that usually lets me upload the categories or taxonomies list in bulk.

I tried it but nothing shows up in the form itself so…if I have a restaurant directory and want Cuisine types, I’m not about to sit there and add one category at a time, add new: BBQ, add new: Italian, add new….nope.

If multiple members with an author role post any of these listings in their respective categories, where does the email sent from the form go? To the actual author or to the site admin email?

I added a list of locations. Initially, it allowed me to click each location and assign it to a specific directory. I deleted the default and started over. The locations are all there but there is no longer an option to assign them. No locations show up in the location drop down.

    Hello msmckay !

Thank you for reaching out with your questions regarding Directorist. We appreciate your interest in giving it another try and would be glad to assist you in understanding its current functionalities.

    1. Multiple Directory Types: Yes, you are correct. Directorist now supports multiple directory types within a single installation. Each directory can be customized with its own set of categories and locations. This means that you can have separate directories for businesses, hotels, classifieds (such as real estate and cars), and more. Regarding category and location conflicts, Directorist ensures that listings are specific to their respective directories. For example, if a user searches for restaurants in Texas within the restaurant directory, they will only see listings related to restaurants in Texas within that specific directory. However, the navbar above allows users to switch between directory types seamlessly, utilizing the instant search feature. For instance, if users search for restaurants in Texas, it will show the restaurants in Texas. However, using that navbar if you change the directory type to cars, it will show all the listings of cars in Texas, without refreshing the page.
    2. Registration and Listing Submission: Directorist provides flexibility regarding user registration. You can utilize your preferred registration plugin, such as Ultimate Member, to handle registrations. Directorist itself doesn’t require users to register unless desired. Just make sure that the user are being registered as “subscriber”. Directorist supports 2 roles, “Admin”, “Subscriber”. Additionally, you can customize registration forms extensively to suit your needs. As for listing submission, non-registered users can indeed submit listings if configured to do so. Once registered, you can restrict listing submission pages to specific user roles, ensuring control over the submission process.
    3. Blog Option and Updates: Directorist does not include a built-in blog option. However, our premium themes may offer this feature, providing you with the ability to create a blog with similar category and location functionalities as the directories.Regarding updates, Directorist has evolved significantly over time and is now a matured plugin with a feature-rich environment. As a result, updates are less frequent, focusing more on stability and enhancements rather than constant changes that disrupt customizations.
    4. Bulk Category and Location Addition: We understand the importance of efficiency, especially when managing large datasets. While Directorist doesn’t natively support bulk addition of categories and locations, our technical support team can assist you with a custom solution for this. Please reach out to us for guidance, and we’ll ensure your needs are met.

We hope this information helps clarify your queries and aids in your decision-making process. Should you have any further questions or require assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Welcome back to Directorist, and we wish you a successful journey ahead!

    Warm regards,
