This plugin used to be very different. It was called WP User Avatar and simply allowed users to set a custom avatar for their account without having to use Gravatar. It was simple and did its job well. I really liked it!

Then I opened my website today to find a bunch of weird notifications in my dashboard about a plugin called “ProfilePress” needing to do a bunch of extra things to my website. I never installed a ProfilePress plugin, so I was worried that my site had been compromised.

Silly me for trusting that the third-party developers would respect the auto-update feature I had opted into. This is ridiculous… I DO NOT like that this plugin was completely swapped for another one. They should’ve started a new plugin for this. They could’ve even deprecated WP User Avatar and that would’ve been better than this stupid stunt.

WordPress should revise their policies for plugins to account for this type of practice now that auto-update is a broadly used feature especially.

I use WP User Avatar on a few other sites as well, and those ones do not have auto-updates turned on. So those ones will annoyingly un-updated from now on.
