• The following thread was marked as resolved, but it wasn’t actually answered:

    https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/not-a-valid-template-1

It is the #1 result in Google for this issue, and I think that the [resolved] tag on it may be keeping the plugin authors from addressing the newer questions, so I am opening a new thread about it.

After upgrading, using the following shortcode results in an error message of [Not a valid template]:

    [album id=3 template=lightbox]

Does anyone know what the fix is for this? I had to roll back to a pre-2.0 version of NextGen to get it working again, but it would be nice to be able to stay up to date if possible. Thanks.

  • same problem here

@dreifus: It is impolite to interrupt another poster’s ongoing thread unless you are posting a solution or suggestion. It causes significant problems for the forum’s volunteers and prevents us from being able to track issues by topic. Please post your own topic.

esmi, normally I would back you up with this execpt for 2 things:

    1) 141 of 1,326 support threads in the last two months have been resolved. I don’t think that adding duplicate threads with a plugin this widely used that is so riddled with issues is a good idea. I think the develpers are overwhelmed with the bugs/issues found on this release, to say the least.

    2) I think this is an issue that is fairly widespread. When I developed a solution that used the custom template referred to in this error, the how-to thread got quite a bit of attention on it from people who were all trying to do the same thing. Letting the developers know that this isn’t some minor irritation and affects a lot of people might help them3 to prioritize it.

@mvandemar: These forums have rules. Please read them.

As you will see, one of these rules – entitled Where to Post – specifically states:

Unless you are using the same version of WordPress on the same physical server hosted by the same hosts with the same plugins, theme & configurations as the original poster, do not post in someone else’s thread. Start your own topic.

    Please abide by this.

@mvandemar – In your specific cases the [album] template parameter only uses either ‘compact’ or ‘extend’, there is no ‘lightbox’ template value (or any other values currently coded). The error message you are seeing is what I would expect to be sent to the screen.

Please see this page for more details on our NextGEN Legacy shortcodes: https://www.nextgen-gallery.com/help/shortcodes/

We do recommend using the ATP in place of hard-coding shortcodes but we will continue to support their uses, both NextGEN Legacy versions as well as our new NextGEN Gallery versions.

esmi, we know this isn’t a hosting configuration issue though. It’s also something many people are looking for an answer to:

I am not trying to get in an argument, and I agree that in general people should not piggyback on other threads. Most of the NGG threads have multiple people with the same issues participating in them though, and I don’t think that someone else saying that they also need an answer to the question causes issues (as opposed to someone posting a bunch of irrelevant details on an unrelated issue).

photocrati – does NGG no longer support custom templates then?

Most of the NGG threads have multiple people with the same issues participating in them

Only because we don’t have enough forum moderators 24/7 to try and control this. Please do not try to undermine the work that the mods do here. We have very good reasons (based on extensive experience) for pushing people towards opening their own topics.

sorry, i was just saying that i was having the same problem, not my idea to cause any trouble

photocrati, i′was trying to use a custom template like mvandemar said, it doesn′t support custom templates for albuns?

but still it also happens when i use [album id=1 template=extend]

    only template=compact works

just realized that the same thing seems to be happening in the Nextgen website on the part of galleryview

    https://www.nextgen-gallery.com/nextgen-gallery-templates/
GALLERYVIEW TEMPLATE. Requires third party plugin here. This is a example of what can be done with add-on plugins. This one integrates jQuery GalleryView. You’ll need to install the plugin and use the template shortcode. Shortcode format: [ nggallery id=1 template=galleryview images=0 ]

    [Not a valid template]

@photocrati – did you realize that this was happening on the NextGen Gallery site itself? There was functionality that allowed for people to build their own custom templates, and your earlier reply makes it seem as if you did not know that. Is this a known issue, and if so, is there a workaround yet for it?

    Thanks.

    (@photocrati)

@mvandemar – My original thoughts were that you were trying to implement a custom template (which are still supported) but you had not indicated that was the case when you originally posted.

We also cannot guarantee the functionality of any third-party plugin as we are simply not the developers of those third-party plugins. We would be happy to help them bring their code bases up to a compatible status with the current version of NextGEN Gallery.

We also recognize that some users have become very dependent on some third-party plugins and recommend, if necessary, for those users to roll back to our NextGEN Legacy version 1.19.13.

As it is, you can try placing your custom templates in one of these two places:

    /wp-content/themes/[yourtheme]/nggallery/

    /wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/products/photocrati_nextgen/modules/ngglegacy/view/

If they are compatible with the current NextGEN Gallery and they are still not working then by all means please submit a Bug Report (https://www.nextgen-gallery.com/report-bug/ … please reference this topic) and we will see what we can do to help get them sorted out.

    Thanks!
