My site has a long list of hierarchical pages and a custom hierarchical taxonomy. When choosing which pages/taxonomy to show sidebar on, sometimes most of the list is missing, with some of the hierarchy showing as indented and some not. Seems to resolve if I check every page/taxonomy in the list, publish, check more items that suddenly appear, publish, repeat until all pages/taxonomy are checked. Then the entire hierarchy displays correctly and I can uncheck the pages/taxonomy that I don’t want.

This “problem” is actually fully intentional.

Before version 1.3, the newest 200 posts/terms of every public post type/taxonomy were loaded in the sidebar edit screen, which was okay for smaller sites, but performance wise and UX wise not good for sites with lots of content – some would be cut off!

Therefore I introduced a search field which, as of version 1.3.1, only is visible if you have more than 20 posts/terms.
Are you not able to see this search field?

The sidebar edit screen now only lists the 20 latest pages/terms + all the pages/terms you have selected previously for the sidebar on top. The indentation is “lost” if you select a child, because all selected pages/terms will be listed on top.

If you think your problem is caused by something else, please let me know.

Okay, this intentional functionality wasn’t clear to me. I guess it’s the search that’s not working then. I see the search box, and if I type in my category name it shows it in the autocomplete box, but selecting it does nothing. Maybe if I click “Add”… oh wow it works. I thought the add button was like add a new category if it doesn’t already exist. Okay, just usability issues then I guess. I was expecting it to work more like WordPress’s built in category chooser.

Edit: When I search for a term, why do I have to select it by clicking it and then select it a second time by clicking “add”? Shouldn’t it just be one step instead of two?

I appreciate your feedback and agree that the design of the search function is not very intuitive. I will change it to behave the way you describe as it indeed is better with one step.

Awesome! Really awesome plugin by the way, hate to see it marred by this little bug. I noticed though that even when I select a category using the search and add button, the checked off category is not being remembered after I save the sidebar. So, umm, maybe it is a bug after all.

You are absolutely right about that bug. As it is pretty big I will fix it asap and hopefully release an updated version later today. Thanks for pointing this out.

Please forgive my slowness to comprehend but i don’t understand the way the pages menu works.

Since the selection menu only shows the first 20 items i assume i must then search for each existing page by name to add it to the list. If i have a large number of pages already created, this will take a while. Is that what i must do?

Is it possible to show a paginated tree of all existing pages with indents the way the WordPress Appearance > Menus does?

If i select “Automatically select new children of a selected ancestor” this will not add current children to the selection, correct?

Thank you very much for your patience.

As of version 1.3.5, that is what you much do, unfortunately. By default, 20 items (plus previously selected items) are displayed. If you want to expand this list, see the code provided here: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/not-able-to-find-post-to-connect-to (line numbers may have changed)

I am currently working on version 2 which will include pagination, but it is not possible in version 1.3.5.

When you select “Automatically select new children of a selected ancestor”, it will only add new children to the sidebar, and not current children, no. This behaviour might change in version 2 such that current children are selected too.
