    Hi,

I thought that the plugin had stopped working, but when checking the server I found that the image I checked hadn’t been converted, even though those uploaded to the media library at the same time have.

What are the likely causes (and solutions) for this? It would be best to be able to trust that the plugin is doing it’s job rather than having to check the server or images every time to see if they’ve been converted.

Hi @p-j-w thanks for getting in touch!

I can see that you have some images that have been converted to webP and some that haven’t. If the webP version of the image to be converted is not smaller than the original image then the webP version will not be created. So it’s possible this is the case for these but if you could provide one of those images via a Google Drive link then I can test it myself.

It’s also possible that there could be a plugin conflict. I’d be happy to check your setup if you could share your Site Health Information here.

I can see some have converted so presume your server supports webP but could you just double check that it does in case something has changed this without your knowledge. The best way to tell is by going to Tools > Site Health > Status. If you see a recommended improvement that says “Your site does not support WebP,” the WebP generation for new JPEG uploads will not work.

If you have any questions on the above then please do let me know.

    That makes sense.

I had already checked Site Health > Status before posting – all good.

@p-j-w Thanks for sharing the image. I can confirm that when uploading the same image to my site I also don’t get a webP version of the image. This is because in this case the webP version would not have been smaller in size than the original image.

I suspect that all the other images you have highlighted are the same but if you’d like me to check a couple more for you I’d be more than happy to do so. Otherwise, is there anything else I can help you with?

    Hi Adam,

Thanks for confirming. That’s fine, I can live with that ??

I have another question… if the plugin has created webP versions, can I then delete the jpg versions from the server, or is that likely to have unintended consequences?

Also is this the right place to offer feedback on the plugin? This might be more programming than it’s worth… but some visual confirmation of the image conversion on upload would be good. Either a pop up screen, or better, more info about alternate versions of an image on the server displayed in the Media Library.

    Thanks for your help ????

    @p-j-w No problem at all.

You can delete the JPG image if you wish to choose and it will not have any impact on the webP created image or anything else.

Thanks for the suggestion! You are more than welcome to create a feature request for this here and the team will review.

Hope this helps to answer everything for you.

    Hi Adam,

    Thanks for the follow up.

So one of the reasons I asked about deleting the JPGs is because I noticed that the thumbnail used in the Media Library was still a JPG even though a webP had been created on the server. I hadn’t tested at that point, but renaming the JPG leaves a blank placeholder in the Library. So that JPG can’t be deleted. I’ll need to test but if that’s the case I thought there may be other instances where deleting the JPGs could lead to issues?

I’ll have a think about a feature request and post in the appropriate place on GitHub.

@p-j-w No problem and thank you for your observations and questions. Having discussed this further with the team, deleting the JPG from the file system will have impact when searching for MIME type based on metadata from sources.

Attachments have a sources attribute in the metadata that stores all MIMEs information. So in this case, JPG files will be present in the metadata but not the files in file system.

With the above in mind I would recommend not to delete the JPG after the webP has been created. Hope this helps to answer your question in this case and let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with.
