• Hello,

I have thousands of spam comments on my website. My host told me that if I was able to turn off commenting completely, and add captcha plugin (which I did), they would reduce cost of my repair by 50%.

I went to settings and discussion and unclicked “allow people to post comments on new articles” and updated, but then the check mark was back next to the box. Tried multiple times and it stayed that way.

Then went to all posts, selected all, edit, and “do not allow comments” and clicked update … and i went back in and the “do not allow” was not selected.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Thanks
    Pete

Should I maybe update to the new wordpress 4.2.2 as it suggests when I log onto wordpress?

    With everything deactivated?

OK i updated to wordpress with everything deactivated… tried to click off comments… still no go :-/

So we have one thing left: The theme. This can prove timely, but required now.

I suggest you take time now to record your menus and widgets.

Switch to a default unedited theme.

And note, I am no longer seeing the Karma Child Theme in use.

Is this all better than installing a disable comments plugin?

Am I risking something by doing this? Hence you mentioning I record my menus and widgets? I would hate to end up with a worse problem than I have…

I do not want to have to set up all my widgets and menus again if something goes wrong. I’d rather pay my host site to fix than risk that…

Right now it says I have Karma Child Theme active … I do not see default unedited as option, unless I need to “add a new theme”

Also, all my plugins are deactivated still… correct?

    Thanks
    Pete

    Pete,

Are you still getting many Spam comments?

That question will require a timely review.

Well none have come in the past few minutes but as I referenced earlier the host told me as follows: As for the comments issue, I actually went in there initially and tried to delete all of the spam messages but half way through the 3000 comments my window froze up as well. One of the spam comments on that page is causing browsers to crash, so the only way to remove it is to have a developer run a database script to delete all comments from there.

    So…? :-/

Is my best bet to just download a disable comments plug in and have the host company do the rest??
    Thanks!
    Pete
