Not charging taxes

Hey @calfree,

We definitely want your site to be charging customers tax. Here are a few things that we’ll need to help you get to the bottom of this.

1. What state or country is set in WooCommerce > Settings > General?
2. Where are customers not charged tax that you’re expecting them to be charged tax?
3. Could you please send me a copy of your site’s System Status? You can find it via WooCommerce > Status. Select “Get system report” and then “Copy for support”. Once you’ve done that, you can paste it here.

That is the expected behavior. Automated taxes only collects taxes from the state that matches the store’s location in WooCommerce > Settings > General. If you have tax nexuses in other states, you’ll need to either use manual taxes or a service like TaxJar to handle this for you.

Great question! I’m not a tax expert so you’ll want to speak with a tax professional about exactly what taxes you need to collect from which states.

TaxJar has some great information about each state’s collecting requirements. Most of them have a certain amount of orders or a minimum total value threshold that needs to be met before collecting tax is required.

It can get complicated so make sure to check with a tax professional who has experience with multi-state sales tax so you get the correct information you need.

Ok I downloaded and connected Taxjar and nothing changed. Same problem. What did I do wrong?

The tax caluclates from other states if you choose Local Pickup but everything else goes to zero.

With TaxJar, I believe you’ll need to set up any extra tax nexuses you’ll need. It can handle more complex tax setups, but you will have to direct it a bit so it knows more about your business.

They also provide support for their extension and service. If you have questions about TaxJar, I’d suggest reaching out to them directly.

When you say a nexus, are you referring to other physical locations?

Not necessarily. A business may need to collect sales tax in a state where they have no physical presence but where they do sell products.

A tax professional can help you determine if you have any nexuses outside of the state where you’re physically located. Then TaxJar can collect sales tax on the nexuses you define.

No I was referring to your plugin

If it returns sales tax for shipping addresses that match your store’s state, then yes it is working as expected.

This just made me think that this could be a greater issue with the plugin. I went and checked the other two sites I have your plugin installed on (lasercap.me & brightbarllc.com) and they are both having the same issue.

I’m just very confused as to how all three sites would be having issues calculating taxes. That seems like a fatal flaw with the software if it only functions in 1 of 49 states. And these other 2 are located in California. So are you saying that you really have to go in and look up the taxes in every single state and plug that in manually for each site??
