not directed to login

I’ve protected a page for non admins, ‘choose how to protect your content’ is set to ‘redirect’ and ‘where will they be taken?’ is set to ‘login & back’. But what happens is a message appears: ‘access denied’. Is there something else I need to do to get login & back to work?
