• I’m running several pages plus one menu item showing the posts in category “Blog.” (There may be a better way to pull up all posts, but I may want to split this into 2 apparent “blogs” later.) In Twenty Ten and in several other themes I’ve tried (filtered for recent update and/or mention of 3.0), the menu works fine and clicking on menu item Blog displays the category archives.

BUT when I click on a blog entry title, I just get a refresh of the category archives page: multiple entries, plus the same sidebar configuration.

I haven’t messed with the Twenty Ten theme. What could be going wrong?

    URL?

I have a feeling you’re calling the wrong Post URL in your crafted loop.

Can you share the code you wrote for the “blog” page?

    (@marthalee)

    here‘s my url

I haven’t done anything to the loop, or to any of the other files in the Twenty Ten theme. I created a post category called “blog” and made posts in that category. My main menu displays the other pages plus the category “blog.”

I’m not sure what you’re asking.

I thought you’d custom made a page. But no ??

Okay, so go to https://www.marthaleeturner.com/category/blog and look at the URL for that first post. It’s https://www.marthaleeturner.com/http:/www.marthaleeturner.com/blog

Which is clearly not right ?? That’s why it’s not working.

Now the question is ‘How on earth did you get the URL to do that?’

What’s the WordPress address (URL) and Site address (URL) from your General Settings?

Also what are your permalinks set to?

    Thread Starter marthalee

    (@marthalee)

Well, the problem was still there after my morning update. Then, on a hunch, I went back to the default permalink structure–and NOW it’s working OK.

Haven’t I seen others comment that they were having trouble with permalinks in 3.0 RC? Put my issue into THAT bucket.

Without knowing what your custom permalinks were set to, odds are you had them set to something weird that broke the links ?? That’s the simplest reason why. I don’t think this is related to the other permalinks issues, most of which seem to do with MU and domain setups.

    (@marthalee)

Your posting from “3 hours ago” was not showing when I posted at “two hours ago,” sorry for seeming to ignore your message. No, I don’t know how my permalinks got like that. All’s well that ends well. Thanks for your help.

OK, so the side issue of links going to the wrong page is resolved.

BUT I’m still able to display the “single column, no sidebar” view.

I’m running WP 3.0 now, I’m running my own child theme of 2010 that has changed ONLY the header.php and style.css files–the rest is 2010.

My understanding is that, if you click on the title of a post, you should get the single column, no sidebar view automatically.

My understanding is also that, if in Admin, under Page Attributes > Template, you select “One Column, No Sidebar,” you should get the single column, no sidebar view. That works for my “static” pages but does not work for my Blog page–not for the page view, not for the single post (click title) view, not for Category Archives view, not for Tag Archives view.

I’m trying to sort out this apparent malfunction prior to attempting to create a DIFFERENT sidebar for my blog post views.

No, not with 2010. That’s how it used to work with Kubrick.

Right. That’s how it’s supposed to work ?? Page attributes are set for THAT page only.

If you want to edit your blog posts etc, then you need to make your child theme handle that.

    (@marthalee)

Hmmm, let me get this straight, on the Page that displays my parent-category Blog, it is not supposed to make any difference whether I select “Default Template” or “One-column, no sidebar”? (Because I get the same (two-column) view either way: on THAT page.)

In other words, IF you have posts on a page, the Page Attributes > Template options still displays BUT isn’t supposed to work??

Well … now I’m not sure what your’e asking.

See, a page is a page and post is a post and the category and archive ‘pages’ are neither of those.

You don’t have posts on a page. You have them on posts. Categories work the same way your index page does: it calls a loop. If you make a page called ‘Archives’, then it should use whatever page attributes you give it.

What is this ‘parent-category’ thing you’re talking about?

    Thread Starter marthalee

    (@marthalee)

Well, I’m new to WP, have mostly worked in b2evolution. Have I done things oddly?

See, a page is a page and post is a post and the category and archive ‘pages’ are neither of those.

You don’t have posts on a page. You have them on posts.

Well, I wanted a bunch of “static” pages plus something that behaved in the same way (with respect to menus) that displayed all my blog posts. So I created a page, named it blog, and made my posts to have the (parent) category blog. Seems to work, see https://www.marthaleeturner.com/blog/

What is this ‘parent-category’ thing you’re talking about?

This feature can be found in the Admin page for Edit Post, under “Categories.” It appears most clearly if you click “Add New Category.” You will be asked to identify the Parent Category plus to name the New Category. When you have NOT clicked “Add New Category,” the hierarchy of categories is rather lightly represented by indenting (or not indenting) in the list of existing categories.

    Thread Starter marthalee

    (@marthalee)

Both my horizontal main menu and the vertical menu that included Blog included it as a Category, not as a Page.

I experimentally made the page “Blog” not publicly visible.

Results: the menu item Blog disappeared from the horizontal main menu, but is still there in the vertical side menu.

So: I’m not at all clear what is controlling what, here.

    Thread Starter marthalee

    (@marthalee)

Ah-hah! The side menu displays Category Archives for “Blog.”

I made the PAGE “Blog” publicly visible again, and clicked ABOVE THE EDIT PAGE screen “view page”–and it took me to a presentation of my postings WITHOUT THE CATEGORY ARCHIVE header. And with the full posts, not the excerpts. So the Page “Blog” does seem to control something here.

    Thread Starter marthalee

    (@marthalee)

And in Settings > Readings settings > Front page displays, if you select “a static page” you get to designate TWO things: “Front page,” and “Posts page.” So my “Posts page” is “Blog” and my “Front page” is something else.

Now, I’d love it if the Page Attributes picker on the Pages (including Blog) could be meaningfully set–seems like that would be the place to change the look of my Blog Page, which seems to be the entry from my otherwise “static” site into my world of posts. But changing Template in Page Attributes on the Blog Page doesn’t change anything!!!

I think I get what you did now ??

Okay, generally speaking, unless you need a static front page, people just use the built in blog index for their blog ‘page’. I know the double use of ‘page’ gets confusing at times.

This article on Post vs Page may help you a little.

But changing Template in Page Attributes on the Blog Page doesn’t change anything!!!

Right, because you’re doing it … well, not wrong, but weirdly ??

The static front page is a page that lists ONLY what you want (as opposed to the default ‘show the most recent posts’ page).

The static POSTS page is the one you use to show your most recent posts when using a static page. This is NOT a ‘this is how my single posts need to look’ control.

    I think that’s where you’re confused ??

If you want the single posts to change, you need to customize your theme. I would suggest utilizing Child Themes for that.
