This is a terrible addon to WordPress. I don’t have a single client who can figure out how to use it, at all. It is not intuitive. I have had to manually switch back to the old editor on EVERY single website I run (about 50).

When I create a new page, with Gutenberg, I cannot edit the slug without going into the “page” list and quick editing it.

I cannot yet see the advantages that Gutenberg may have. It is an exercise in frustration to use it. It just doesn’t work, it’s not intuitive. I WANTED to be surprised by the changes since I last wrote, but I have seen little change, and we are all living in frustration, hoping for a better wordpress with you, but so far, I don’t think this is it.

Please make it useful and intuitive (it is currently neither), or get rid of it.

    OLD REVIEW (STILL VALID)
I have used so many various editors, plugins, etc… and they all have their quirks. Gutenberg is by far the least intuitive one I’ve tried. I am frustrated after just a few minutes.

I am not talking about writing a simple blog post – I’m a web designer, so I make websites for a living. I need the abilities that Gutenberg claims, but it just stinks at it. It makes something that is so simple, WAY complicated and frustrating. I plan to turn this plugin off as soon as possible.

I don’t understand why with ALL the negative reviews and added bloat, that WordPress is continuing to move forward with this mess?

I love innovation, but you have to listen to the people at some point or prove that we’re wrong. So far the software speaks for itself and unless someone is making a simple blog, Gutenberg sucks.

Could you list out the top 5 issues that you faced?

@anevins Here’s some issues off the top of my head:

    – without working columns, it fails
    – finding the H1 tag! Where the heck is it? Only H2, H3, H4… unless I switch to classic: https://www.dropbox.com/s/k4ppryw7zhv0bh2/Screenshot%202018-09-03%2021.33.53.png?dl=0
    – switch to HTML, I have to look for it – it used to be obvious – it’s hidden in the top right menu dropdown ??
    – What’s with the extra code? <!– wp:heading –>
So, I can’t just write normal HTML anymore? Why not just keep it straight? Maybe this is telling it to create ‘blocks’? But sometimes I copy all code and edit it ouside, this will make it more frustrating, especially if basic HTML can break the ‘block’ system.
    – I can now create a button, but I cannot move it inside anything – a column for example.
    – No Copy and Paste of elements- I can make reusable, but if I just want to reuse it once, I have to re-make it.

    – Manually edit width/size of columns or page? Forget it.

    etc… etc..

I get it – evolve, grow, make better, but may I suggest that you first look at what Divi has done and learn from them? I know that their system is probably bulkier, but it seems that they really considered the full package – instead of straight blocks, they have 4+ types of containers:

    1. Full Width
    2. Container
    3. Layout (inside container)
    4. Module (inside layout)

you basically only created modules and so it feels like a partially built system.

That’s really useful thank you so much for that!

I am also struggling hugely with Gutenberg. I’m relatively new to web development, but have been a software developer for over 30 years. The site I’ve most recently built is a church web site at https://www.bereans.com.

The biggest problem I have with Gutenberg (aside from the non-intuitive issues already discussed) is that it’s just too darn flaky. Just last night, I downloaded the latest plugins for Gutenberg & Advanced Gutenberg. I went to create a new Page, started typing some text and…nothing! I tried logging out of admin and logging back in again. Still – nothing. No text appeared when I typed. So then I tried quitting my browser altogether (Chrome) and restarting. Again – nothing. On a hunch, I tried typing Cmd-A (this is “Select All” on a Mac) and suddenly I discovered that the editor was trying to give me white text on a white background. Eeek!

What’s really bizarre here is that I was actually using the Classic Editor!! The only change to my setup was that I’d just upgraded both Gutenberg plugins – as stated earlier. When I discovered the problem, I immediately disabled those two plugins and suddenly sanity was restored.

Now, you’re probably wondering why I was using the Classic Editor anyway? The reason is that I’ve had countless problems with Gutenberg, especially when using the Classic Editor to edit a page created with Gutenberg, or vice versa. They just don’t play with each other nicely. I get numerous errors about inconsistent/invalid HTML (or words to that effect) and do I want to convert it into blocks, etc, etc.

In view of the above, I try to avoid Gutenberg unless I see some feature I really like, such as the Advanced Table in the Advanced Gutenberg plugin. Even then, when I use this, I often find that things blow up next time I come back to the “Advanced Page”.

I am seriously concerned that at this (presumably?) late state in WP5/Gutenberg development, there are still so many things going wrong. I am an enthusiastic WordPress developer (love the huge number of available WP plugins) but I just hope/pray that Gutenberg remains completely optional for everyone, at least until all the wrinkles are straightened out.

    Dave

Yeah, I concur. I have nearly shattered every bone in both hands pounding my desk in rage at the stupidity that is Gutenberg. I’m glad it is currently only polluting my sandbox, but I now dread the day this travesty is rammed down my throat.

What’s “awesome” is that the classic block doesn’t work as well for me as the current WP editor. Most of the time, I was unable to select multiple images for upload. Most of the time, I could not insert an image into my articles where I attempted to. 90% of the time, the image would insert at the top of the article rather than where I wanted it.

I hate it that the old text editor for modifying HTML is buried. Obviously, the thought here is that WP should do everything and nothing should be in my hands in terms of HTML.

Well, I’ve just discovered Divi Builder and am going to give it a go. Someone said that “it’s the visual page builder that Gutenberg should have been”, or words to that effect. I suspect it’s far more responsive than Gutenberg because the front-end editing is built on top of React.

Anyway, for now, I’ve installed the “Easy Updates Manager” and hopefully locked things down so that Gutenberg isn’t forced on me in the next few weeks. I’d rather stick with 4.9.8 for now, and just see how things go for everyone else. What? Me? Chicken? Lol…

I don’t understand why Gutenberg is live when 75% (at least) of users (and that would be millions), have declared their hate for it. It just isn’t ready yet. It should be removed until it is fully prepared.

I agree with all of the above one of the biggest WordPress mistakes is to include Gutenberg un the core. Too many steps to do What used to do un one…muy clients with hardly understood how to use Classic to Update their sites Now are lost … Searching for a WordPress alternative… So bad… The worst Is You regect to accept the tons of negstive reviews Gutenberg Is getting… Please listen to people … Reverse thid ugly change
