On my PC running windows 10 my site gives no warnings and if you click on the little lock by https, it says that the connection is secure. However, on my mackbook pro that is running a very old operating system (osx 10.9.5) I get a red “Not Secure” warning and the https is crossed out. It won’t let you access the site unless you click on a prompt saying you still want to continue even though it is unsafe.

I use the flatsome theme that came with a ssl certificate (if I remember correctly, it automatically applied when I activated the theme).

Is there something I can do to get a secure website even on older operating systems?

I contacted my host about a month ago, at the time I had a shared hosting plan. I forget exactly how the conversation went, but I remember them saying the site looked secure on their end and any warning is due to the computer not the site. I just recently upgraded to a VPS and was hoping it would fix the problem but it didn’t (currently on a 45 day trial period with the new vps).

My site isn’t the only webpage that gives this warning on my older macbook. Many sites, even some that I know are reputable, give the same warning… probably about 30-40% of every site I visit gives me the warning. It started maybe a year or so ago.

Did something happen over the past year, that affected the entire internet? It seems like many sites are starting to phase out older operating systems. Why do some sites still show secure but not others? Is it due to my host? Or is all wordpress sites? Or is it just my computer?

A couple other problems that only occur on my older macbook and not on my pc… I’m unable to login into my account on that computer. It’s weird, I can register for an account but not login into one. If I enter in a correct email but incorrect password it will recognize it and say the password is wrong. If I enter in correct email and correct password it will clear both fields but still not log you in. I’m also unable to check out using paypal on that computer while I’m able to on my pc. I wonder if those problems are also due to the “not secure” warning.

    Any help is appreciated.

The cause for the message is the free letsencrypt certificate used for your hosting. Last year it let a root certificate expire and older systems get an error message when calling it. regarding your OSX system you can read about it here for example:
    https://community.letsencrypt.org/t/certificates-are-not-trusted-on-chrome-and-safari-on-old-imac-with-el-capitan/161231/33

There are 2 possible solutions for you:
    * Update your OSX. The updated system then also knows the new root certificate.
    * Buy a certificate instead of using the free LetsEncrypt. For costs and modalities you have to contact your hoster.

Your question has nothing to do with WordPress itself, so we can’t help you here.

Thanks for explaining everything and providing the link. I recently noticed that my site is now showing secure on my older mac computer as well as windows 10 pc. Good to go!
