Second edit: I downgraded back down to 1-star. This entire experience has been frustrating between the plugin’s lack of documentation to the developer, who seems to want to just endlessly argue about why I gave him a bad review.

Edit: Okay, I figured this out. My confusion was because the developer very unfortunately named a feature in GeneratePress called Blocks and then named a plugin called GenerateBlocks. FYI: my confusion would have been less with better documentation. Such as how to USE this plugin, e.g. the information (that I later found) located in the FAQs on the WordPress plugin page.

Original: This plugin looks like it should work, but it does absolutely nothing. The “Dashboard” only shows links to the documentation.

    Hi there,

We wouldn’t develop a plugin that does absolutely nothing ??

Did you try searching for GenerateBlocks in the block editor?

If you have some questions regarding the plugin usage then perhaps asking in the support forum would be a good start:

    Hi there,

We’d like to learn from this review and improve the plugin, but I’m not 100% clear on how exactly we can do that.

“GeneratePress Blocks” isn’t a feature in GeneratePress. We do have “Block Elements”, but that feature doesn’t provide any blocks, it simply integrates our Elements feature with all WordPress blocks.

As for documentation for GenerateBlocks, we agree that it’s very important to put it in a very visible place so our users can learn how to use the plugin. That’s why the plugin redirects you to the GenerateBlocks Dashboard page after you activate the plugin. The Dashboard very clearly directs you to all relevant documentation right at the top of the page: https://www.screencast.com/t/EhU4Fe0h

I upgraded to 2 stars, mostly for the frustrating experience. Update your docs.

Can you be more specific on what you’d like to see updated/added? Perhaps a section on how to use the Block Editor and find specific blocks would be useful? There are countless tutorials out there on this, but we could at least add an article on how to add our blocks to the editor if it would be useful.

    Thanks!

Honestly, I’m not sure what to say. I don’t understand how you can’t see how naming something the same could be confusing to people.

To answer your question about the documentation, look at your FAQs:

    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/generateblocks/

    FAQ
How do I add your blocks to my page?
Create a new page or post
Add a new block, and look for the “GenerateBlocks” category
Choose your block and start building.
It’s always best to start with a Container block.

This was the information that I was looking for, which I eventually found.

Originally when I couldn’t figure out how to add a block, I went here:

    https://docs.generateblocks.com/article/headline-overview/

This page does not show me where to add a block, e.g. “How do I add your blocks to my page?”

I know this may seem obvious to you, and now that I realize what happened, I understand the documentation and my confusion. But I have the same general complaint about your documentation across all of your plugins. It’s not the worst, but a lot of times you miss the very obvious things that your end user needs. This has not been the first time I’ve been frustrated.

IMHO, just add a “How Do I Add A Block?” under the General tab in the documentation.
And then add a link on the GenerateBlocks Dashboard right next to the “Learn More” button. An easy fix.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it.

So just to clarify, the main point of confusion had nothing to do with GenerateBlocks itself – it was more about how to use the WordPress editor (mainly how to add blocks to your pages)?

When writing documentation for a WordPress product (theme or plugin) it can be difficult to define the line between general WordPress documentation (how to use the block editor) and product documentation (how to use the theme/plugin).

While I do have trouble seeing how the lack of general WordPress documentation warrants a poor review for the theme/plugin, I do appreciate the feedback and we will be happy to add some basic tips like this to our documentation to prevent future confusion.

If you run into any confusion in the future, feel free to just open a support topic and we’ll be more than happy to help any way we can.

    Thanks again!

I’m sorry, did I misinterpret or miss something that you said? I thought I understood the initial confusion and addressed it.

IMHO, just add a “How Do I Add A Block?” under the General tab in the documentation.

This is what I was referring to as “general WordPress documentation”. Adding blocks to your pages is a WordPress feature – we just add to the list of blocks that are available. However, I can see the benefit of adding this to our documentation, which is why I’ve already asked our team to write up an article.

Second edit: I downgraded back down to 1-star. This entire experience has been frustrating between the plugin’s lack of documentation to the developer, who seems to want to just endlessly argue about why I gave him a bad review.

I see. I’m sorry if you’ve interpreted anything I’ve said as arguing. My intention here was to get a better understanding of the confusion you faced when using the plugin and to address that frustration to prevent it from happening in the future. I think I’ve done that now, so thank you.
