“the page hangs” is all you have given me as a clue, sure I have thoughts, just not positive ones, lol.
No updates to the plugin are required for it to work with a WP3.8.1 Network Multisite.
I use it now on several WP3.8.1 multi sites without issue. The support forum would be littered with reports if it did not work with WP3.8.1.

Come up with a strategy of your own for reading your server error logs. If the log points to a specific error/phrase, I may be of more help.
Come up with your own strategy for determining if specific plugins are in conflict. Have you activated or installed other plugins that could be related to the issue you describe?
At any rate, I would have to be able to reproduce the error you see on my own test server with whatever information you provide. “”the page hangs” is not enough information.
