As of the next major release v6.0, we will completely remove support for WordPress installations running PHP v5.2

    Why?
Because PHP 5.2 was released nearly 10 years ago. Since then, PHP has moved a long, long way forward.

Maintaining development for PHP 5.2 is just too costly, so we’re moving to a minimum of 5.3.

Our statistics show that less than 0.6% of Shield websites are currently running php 5.2

    What if I have 5.2?
Then you need to talk with your web hosting provider about upgrading if you wish to continue using the Shield. We’ve been putting warning notices in the plugin about running 5.2 for about a year now, so you ought to be aware of it.

    What about automatic updates?
We will do our utmost to prevent automatic upgrades, or any sort of upgrades for Shield on websites running php5.2. But we can’t make any promises. So please, discuss this with your web hosting provider if you have doubts.

But but but?! WordPress supports 5.2
Frankly, that’s just wonderful for them. If they could get away with moving off 5.2 they would do it in a heartbeat.
