• Hi,
Great plugin. This is more of a query rather than a support question, although depending on the answer it might turn into one!
I just want to know if there is meant to be a sound whenever a new message/reply arrives or not, because on my site that is not happening in every situation. In fact it is only giving a sound on mobile devices when the user is actually on the chat screen in question, and only intermittently when on another page, but mostly not. It never sounds when the device is ‘sleeping’ even though the site is live when the phone is opened. Is there anywhere that the ‘proper’ behaviour is documented for sound notifications, as well as when the number is meant to appear on the chat icon, and the popup box as well, because they are not occurring consistently on my site. I suspect that there might be either another plugin causing a conflict or some other issue but without knowing exactly how the plugin is meant to behave I am not sure. Thank you for any reply that might be forthcoming.

    Hi there!

If sound plays or not – it depends on browser. Browser have some limitations, for example while user did not interacted with the page (for example clicked) browser dont allow to play sound. Mobile devices also can pause browser to save battery life and it will not play in background as well.

    This is why it happens.

    Thanks!

OK, thank you. I was aware that browsers can do this but I wasn’t aware that mobile devices also affected this.

Further to your response I have done some more testing, and it appears as though the default behaviour that seems to work on every browser, both mobile and desktop, is that when a reply to a message is received, the sound will play but ONLY if the recipient has that specific chat window active on screen; any other time will depend on what screen the user is viewing – if it is the message list a little +1 appears next to the user, but anywhere else there is just a little box that pops up. Sometimes there is nothing though, which I guess could be due to a bad connection.

So is the plugin coded this way, or is this anomalous behaviour? What I would really like is if it would tie into the BP notifications, as I have the WP Notifications Bell plugin set up to both indicate with a number and a sound on new BP notifications, but your plugin doesn’t seem to be triggering BP notifications on my site; is it meant to? If that isn’t part of the plugin’s capabilities, can it either be possibly added in a future release, or can you give me some hints as to how I might achieve it myself please? I am guessing I would need to add a custom notification, but I thought BuddyPress already had that for messages, which is why I am confused. Any help you can give would be most appreciated.
