Notify post author of comment waiting for moderation

We have one blog with multiple authors. We need to moderate the comments, and would like the author of each post to be notified of any comments on their post before the comments are moderated. This would allow the posts’ authors to moderate the comments on their posts (rather than the main administrator).

So far we have tried…

The standard WordPress 2.0.2 set up – In Options –> Discusion I have ticked “email me whenever anyone posts a comment” and “a comment is held for moderation”. This notifies the main administrator, not the post’s author. Giving our authors administrator status does not resolve this – only the main administrator is notified.

Comments notifier plugin by Don Angelillo – this notifies a list of people that there is a new comment.

Notify on comment plugin by Fabio Trezzi – notifies author of the post, but only after comment has been moderated.

Modifying wp_admin_notifier, as per this suggestion https://www.yabfog.com/wp/2005/12/05/wordpress-comment-moderation-tweak – this seems to notify the author of the post, but again only after the comment has been moderated.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this? A search of the forums finds some similar questions, but I’ve not found any describing our exact problem, i.e. we are happy for authors to moderate their own comments and would like them to be notified, rather than the main administrator.
