Number next to menu title in admin UI

Is there a standard way to add a number next to a menu title? For example, the Comments menu has a number indicating the number of new comments.

I’ve been able to do this by adding the html directly in the menu title parameter of add_menu_page, but it isn’t a perfect solution. For one the 3.1->3.2 update broke the styling. It also doesn’t seem to like numbers with more than one digit.
