number of entries in archive

I just updated to WP 2.5.1. In my main page, I only want to show the latest entry so I have “Blog pages show at most” set to 1. However, when I select monthly archives, only 1 post shows up. How do I change the loop so that all the posts in one month – or category – show up on the archive pages?
