number of items in header menu

Apparently, there is a maximum number of menu items in the header menu: I have 59 menu items (too many, I agree, but there’s a reason for that), mostly individual pages as subitems. When I add one other item to the header menu, the whole menu disappears from them front end.

Is there a way to extend the number of items that is permitted (other than work with categories)?
