Odd end to a great plugin

I used Contact Form 7 on all my WordPress sites for years. This was my go-to contact form plugin. I loved its simplicity, intuitiveness and reliability (plus the beautiful Japanese images). In the December 2018 5.1 update, everything changed.
I am deeply perplexed by the author’s decision to totally drop ReCaptcha version 2 and not include it in the update as an option along with version 3. Instead, the update requires ReCaptcha version 3, which on all 15 of my sites let in a flood of spam.
I am additionally baffled by his reticence to provide explanation for this bizarre decision that has created countless headaches across the Web. It’s as though the real author was kidnapped and forced at gunpoint to issue a toxic update.
A truly odd end to a great plugin.
