Offensive geo-targeting all over www.ads-software.com

    Dear WP.

    (seeing no other option to contact WP about the website, I’m posting it here)

    I’m constantly seeing this:

    It says “WordPress is available in your language: Russian”.

    Russian is definitely NOT my language, and definitely not a language of 95% of the population of Lithuania. As well as not the language of other small countries in the region.

    It’s the language of the country that had occupied us for 50 years. An occupation that ended 20+ years ago, but still left us scarred.

    If you’re doing geo-targeting, at least make an attempt of doing it the way you’re not offending anyone.

  • I do not think this is geo-targeting, and it does not say “Your language” as you claim. I am also in Lithuania, and I see this: https://prntscr.com/9ctvm6

    Hi,

    Actually, this line is populated based on your browser data.

    When you visit any website address, any language you’ve installed on your computer is sent as part of the headers to the websites you visit. This is what we use on www.ads-software.com to determine what languages to suggest to you (we presume you only have languages you speak installed, as that makes the most sense), and is why people in the same country may see different results.

    If you’d like to know which languages you can confirm this by visiting a service such as https://labs.toscho.de/selbst/ and looking at the Accept-Language line.

    If you are using Chrome, it seems the browser may some times populate languages based on what kind of content you have been reading lately, you can check this in chrome://settings/languages

    OK, my apologies.

    Indeed Russian was for some reason in the accepted languages list in Chrome. (no idea why, because I never used it)

    In any case, sorry once again for blaming this on WP. Cheers! ??

    For the record, we *do* have IP based geo-targetting for this system, as a fallback. It rarely works, and the data that comes from the Accept-Language header overrides it anyway. All modern browsers send us this header, so we never really use the geo system. It’s pretty much always the browser.
