• It would be nice if there was an offline theme editor where we can do our revisions, edits and modifications to our themes without screwing up what other people see when they look up your blog. I realize the theme editor IS offline but in order to see the updates, we need to refresh our site. So any screw ups and mistakes can be seen by others as well. If there was a way we could view how our changes(related to the theme) will actually look like then it would help us work on our sites better and faster.

  • the very simplest thing to do would be to install apache/php/mysql on your home computer. The WAMP package, available at https://www.wampserver.com/en/index.php is completely free, and the install is almost brainless. Once installed, you simply copy your WordPress package over to the proper directory within WAMP, and it should start up, after you do the required wordpress database setup using phpmyadmin (which is included).

After setup, you simply get WAMP booted, browse to your new wordpress testbed directory, and then start up your editor in another window, to make your changes to your theme. Simply go back and forth between your server window (what the world would see if you moved the WP files online), and your edit window…be sure to make ONE change at a time, so you know exactly what broke when you break it in your editing mode.

Trial and error will get you up to speed. Until someone else writes a SPECIFIC WP Theme viewer, this will get you going within an hour, of doing exactly what you want to do.

There is a way of doing this if you have the theme switcher plugin installed, and it can be used so only you see the changes. It’s not something I’ve bookmarked though, but a search around ‘theme switcher’ should turn it up.

Any suggestions for a package like WAMP that will run on a Mac?

    Maybe something like MAMP? https://www.mamp.info/en/home/

I just found MAMP for Mac users at https://www.webedition.de/en/serviceCenter/download/mamp.php but have yet to start working with it
