og:image and post thumbnail: Just to be sure…

Do you mean the featured image in the side panel of the post or page edit screen when you refer to the post thumbnail?

If you do not set a Facebook Image under the “Social” tab in the Yoast SEO metabox, Yoast SEO will automatically use the featured image of the page as the default og:image. If there is no featured image, the plugin will either select an image in the page content or use the default Facebook image set under the SEO > Social > Facebook tab.

We have more details about how the og:image is set in the Yoast Open Graph developer docs.

Yes, I am referring to the featured image in the side panel.
I did not set up a Facebook image under the “Social” tab of the Yoast SEO metabox, I only set up an image under the SEO> Social> Facebook tab.

So the behavior described on the link is what I thought.

I can now clearly see a (good) limitation in this behavior:
If the thumbnail is very large, Yoast will fold to the default image.

Did you know about this limitation (size? Resolution? Both?)

We know that Facebook has some information regarding the image dimensions etc, you can find this in their developer documentation here: https://developers.facebook.com/docs/sharing/webmasters/images/. Hope that helps.

This is not a Facebook limitation, this happen on Yoast.
It’s a good think that Yoast have this behavior: i just want to know how this limitations are determined.

I’m having a smiliar problem and it’s been 3 months or more since it occured…
Meaning: FB uses wrong OG image. Just look at this:

It uses this image: https://polszczyzna.pl/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Empatia-co-to-znaczy-co-to-jest-definicja-slownik-znaczenie-slowa-przyklady-synonim-PolszczyznaPL.png

but the proper one is this one: https://polszczyzna.pl/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/test.png And of course I put this image in Social > Facebook Image (In Yoast).

It was working well for a few years and since few months we’re having this problem. I have the latest version of the WP and Yoast.

Could you please help to resolve this issue?
