Since switching to SSL on my website, SEO Yoast has been very hit or miss when it comes to populating the OG:IMAGE tag on Facebook.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometime’s on posts it displays og:image:secure_url tags in debugger and sometimes it doesn’t.

On certain Facebook pages the image works fine and on other it’s grayed out.

Any idea what could be causing this inconsistent crawl?

We checked on the https://www.rapwave.net/2018/08/06/travis-scott-stop-trying-to-be-god-official-music-video/ page and do see that Yoast is outputting the og:image tag correctly, but that the debugger is not displaying the image here. The debugger is also showing a 206 response code, which indicates partial content.

If you clear your cache (server, plugin, or CDN such as Cloudflare) does this resolve the issue? If you are not sure how to clear your server cache you should speak with your host provider.

Also, we would recommend reviewing your server/access logs to check whether any content or requests are possibly being blocked when Facebook tries to access the page data.

It’s completely sporadic and resolving my cache doesn’t fix the issue.

When I paste a link to my page it often shows the OG:IMAGE working, and then when the link actually gets posted, it returns a grey box.

Sometimes the link will go up fine, then minutes later it will revert to a grey box.

Sometimes the link will show the proper image on some pages, and not on others.

It makes no sense since the cacheing file would be the same for the image on each instance. When I rescrape sometimes the image shows up, sometimes it doesn’t. 90% of posts work, 10% of them don’t.

What on earth is going on???

Can you please provide us with additional URLs of the pages/posts that are not loading the og:image data correctly so we can review it for any other issues in the source code?

If there is not any issues with the code or the cache and the content is sporadically loading this may be caused by Facebook having some type of issue with it’s requests to the server being blocked. Have you reviewed your logs for any type of access issues?

To the best of my knowledge Facebook requests are not being blocked, I certainly haven’t created any special rules in robots.txt file or anything like that.

The Facebook page in question is https://www.facebook.com/rapWAVE

I’ve left a broken link up for testing purposes here: https://www.facebook.com/rapWAVE/posts/1193164677505545

What’s interesting is you may see the image load if you click directly to the post using that link in the screenshot, but when it displays on my page’s news feed it’s grayed out!??

I’ve included screenshots of direct post link and news feed post.

Thanks for taking the time to resolve this issue.

    Hi Kyle,

Can you check again if the issue persists? We ask as we’ve checked your news feed and the image loads correctly on our side: https://i.imgur.com/SnSFKy7.png

Also, if you have any browser extensions, please disable them temporarily. We ask as we weren’t able to replicate the issue.

We are looking forward to hearing from you.

That’s the strange part about this issue. There is no rhyme or reason to the error.

On some pages the post will work, on others it will not. For some users the post will work, for others it will not.

Sometimes it works right away and then later turns grey. Other times the link starts out grey and won’t fix from debugging, but hours later will resolve itself.

95% of attempted links work, and then a random portion of them have this odd error.

At the time of posting here is another broken page link:

Same post category and OG image tags as all the working links but for some reason this one hasn’t resolved itself.

It’s hard to troubleshoot because the issue is so inconsistent and the time window for reply leaves a lot of opportunity for it to fix or break itself in the meantime.

Once again thanks for your extended help on this matter.

Since it’s very hard to replicate the issue, we think it might be specific to your website. We’d need to investigate further but are unable to do so on these forums. You can purchase Yoast SEO Premium and receive our Premium email support and we can help you further.
