If you did it you’d have to do it in javascript and even that is iffie. Plus you could have flicker.

Background images don’t scale, so if you load a non-repeating image into a div, for example, as a background via css you have to know how large the parent div is. If background images would scale you wouldn’t have this problem. Its in the pipes (I think) for CSS3 so you’llhave to wait a a couple of years for browser support (and wait until about 2050 for IE support). Here is what I would do.

Load your background inside a image tag rather than as a CSS background and using CSS set its width to 100% so that it fills its parent element. Then position:absolute or position:relative your content over the top of it.
