    Hey there,

I’ve tried just about everything I can personally think of to fix this issue, and looked through various forums for a fix on this but have never found an answer!

My website is using UpdraftPlus as its backup service. I am using Dropbox as the remote storage, and the back ups seem to work completely fine. However, it does not erase the previous back up data from Dropbox. Subsequently my Dropbox fills up quickly and I have to manually erase the old back ups to continue backing up the website. I have noticed this has happened to others.

Troubleshooting steps I have taken to no avail include: disconnecting UpdraftPlus from Dropbox and reconnecting, wiping the settings – deleting and reinstalling the plugin – then reconnecting, wiping the setting – deleting and reinstalling the plugin – then connecting to Google Drive

After purging and resetting the problem persists. Since it would seem that the error is coming from UpdraftPlus since no matter what storage system I use, the old backups are not deleting.

There are about 25 lines of code at the end pertaining to the Dropbox deletion that it shows an error:

    0184.382 (0) Dropbox: request deletion: backup_2023-09-26-1419_Fountains_2_Go_351bb188c7d5-plugins.zip 0184.718 (0) Dropbox: path_lookup (line: 283, file: /home2/thebeto2/public_html/fountains2go/wp-content/plugins/updraftplus/includes/Dropbox2/OAuth/Consumer/Curl.php) 0184.719 (0) Dropbox: deletion failed

Really hoping for direction on fixing this! I’ve been pulling my hair out hoping it’s something simple but after scouring the forums it doesn’t appear to be. TIA!

Alrighty, I changed a few things in here to generic names, and have included the logs dating back to the first of August (there’s been upwards of 20 backups run in that timeframe) I hope this helps! Thanks!

If you try and run through the restore process is the plugin able to retrieve the backup from your remote storage (You don’t need to go through with the restore)

Here’s the message I received when I went to do a restore:

“The backup archive files have been processed, but with some warnings. If all is well, then now press Restore again to proceed. Otherwise, cancel and correct any problems first.

    Warnings:

    This database backup has the following non-core WordPress database tables excluded: page_fake_url, ssl_commentmeta, ssl_comments, ssl_links, ssl_options, ssl_postmeta, ssl_posts, ssl_term_relationships, ssl_term_taxonomy, ssl_termmeta, ssl_terms, ssl_usermeta, ssl_users”

It seems like the plugin can send backups to dropbox and retrieve them but can’t delete them. Can you try deactivating your other plugins and run a backup so that you are over your retention limit and see if send us the log to see if the plugin has been able able to delete the backup.s (I think a third party plugin might be causing issues)

I am using Google Drive and experienced the same thing. I have set Updraft to make one backup of the entire website and two backups of the database and this is daily for both. But once a backup is done, the old backups are NOT deleted and the Google Drive gets filled up and I have to delete manually.

So this issue, which I am also experiencing has not yet been resolved. SInce it was first reported, have you any new insights or remedies?

I am also having the same problem. I have the Updraft Plus settings set to keep 3 backups on Dropbox. There are many more than 3 backups on the site. When I try to delete them, they won’t delete. I tried disconnecting Dropbox and reconnecting to no avail. Any suggestions?

In case anyone ever comes here looking for an actual answer (since Updraft still hasn’t provided one) here’s my issue and the resolution I found:

    1. I have remote storage for one of my websites using Dropbox
    2. I consistently saw ghost files showing up in the list of backups on my site that I had already deleted from Dropbox. (ie, files from april and may that didn’t exist in my dropbox folder).
    3. I rescanned remote storage several times, disconnected Dropbox and readded it, nothing worked.
    4. I went in to attempt deleting the files one more time from updraft’s plugin on the site and noticed a checkbox in the “are you sure” pop up that said “Also delete from remote storage”. I’d always left that checked, but decided to UNcheck it this time.
    5. Voila! The files disappeared when I rescanned one more time.
    6. I was thinking maybe it was a weird glitch/remnant in updraft’s local files that they haven’t properly coded to delete correctly. This seems to be correct from the repro steps. Hope this helps someone!
