My sites experienced significant downtime this past week. My hosting company’s support indicated that “there were various domains spawning too many CGI processes. This is indicative of having too many plugins, heavy traffic, or utilizing a plugin that is not optimized well or using one that requires greater resources.” Here’s an example from the error log:

    [Tue Jan 26 04:28:12 2016] [error] mod_fcgid: too
    many /dh/cgi-system/php56.cgi processes (current:20, max:20), skip the
    spawn request

I’ve since upgraded from TEC 2.0.11 to 4.0.5, and my sites have since remained up (for now, at least). Correlation is not causation, but I’m wondering if the older version of TEC might’ve played a role in what ailed me?

  • Good afternoon Ken,

It’s pretty difficult to answer this question to be honest with you.
There are so many potential variables at play here.

What I will say however, is that there is a good reason why we no longer offer support for version 2.0.11 . We simply cannot guarantee how that version will interact with newer versions of WordPress and other plugins.

Our recommendation would be to update the Events Calendar plugin to match the version of WordPress you are using at all times.

That being said, we are happy to know your site is now working much more to your liking.

    Have a great day!

    Thanks, Geoff!

It was definitely my bad that I let TEC 2.0.11 remain installed for as long as I did. I thought upgrading would be more difficult than it was, which is why I put it off for so long.

Alas, it seems other issues may have been at play, as my hosting service continues to remain unreliable. And here I was really hoping it was my old TEC at fault! :p
