• I am closing an old, dear, heavily followed website due to brain injury. I simply want to change 4 pages to indicate that they will no longer be serviced.
    they end in .htm
WP will not allow that. it makes – instead. that would be ok except that when people type in the old url, they still get my old pages instead of the new announcement. they don’t know to ‘drop’ .htm so that they are redirected.
i’m stumped. and losing brain power by the day.
    anyone?
somehow I need the original url’s to be used, which includes .htm
    help?

install the plugin “simple 301 redirects”

    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/simple-301-redirects/

Use it to map old pages to new ones.

I appreciate you so much Steve, but it isn’t solving my issue. (I don’t explain well right now, sorry)
I have 4 old pages that people go to. I’ve created 4 to replace them, simply saying ‘they aren’t going to operate anymore’. but, S301, is installed and still changes my .htm to a hyphen, and the worst part is that the old original pages still exist with the old url, which my ‘old-timers’ still use and circulate. I don’t want to destroy those pages. I want to keep them in a file. but, I want to rename them with the new explanation pages with the same old names, then replace the new in the site. In WP, I don’t see an option to rename old pages, import them to rename, and now i have duplicate pages. the new ones with the wrong url and the old ones that still show. heaven knows, I don’t want 404’s to start. Does this make sense?
    thx again.
